Gov. John Kasich to propose new tax on fracking to give Ohioans a personal income tax cut Posted: 03 Mar 2012 05:41 PM PST By Reginald Fields, The Plain Dealer COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. John Kasich will propose a new tax on a form of oil and gas drilling known as horizontal fracking and then use the fresh revenue to give a personal income tax cut to Ohioans, The Plain Dealer has learned. The complicated plan also would make changes to various existing taxes petroleum companies pay for pumping out oil and natural gas from beneath Ohio. And it even contains a tax break for some smaller operators, according to documents obtained by The Plain Dealer and confirmed by the governor’s office. But the moneymaker in the deal is the new tax Kasich wants to apply to Ohio’s most sought-after resource, the natural gas liquids trapped deep below in Marcellus and Utica shale formations reached through fracking, a process that shoots a water and chemical concoction down through a drilled hole to break up the shale. Big Oil is salivating at the opportunity to reach these gases — butane, ethane and propane. To read more, visit: http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2012/03/gov_kasich_to_propose_new_tax.html |
Gas Prices Could Hit $5 by Summer Posted: 03 Mar 2012 05:38 PM PST As the average gas price nationwide climbs towards $4 a gallon, analysts and energy experts are forecasting that prices could hit the $5 mark at the pumps this summer. Rising gas prices could set the economy back. Crude prices surged last year, causing prices at the pump to shoot up. This time around, however, gas prices are climbing similarly, but the price of crude is lower. Tensions with Iran, rather than supply and demand, may be the reason gas prices have been consistently climbing, but what has yet to be seen is the impact that this will have on the economy and the country on the whole. Mad Money's Jim Cramer believes prices will not stop rising until the US reaches an understanding with Iran. "I believe $5 gas could set the whole economy back. While I know natural gas can bring the price down longer term if it is embraced by Washington, nothing can roll the price of oil back except for one movement by Iran to stand down from their nuclear program." Angry Birds, Meet Jailbirds: New App Helps You Snitch on Your Friends Posted: 03 Mar 2012 05:33 PM PST
In less time than it takes to play a turn in Words With Friends, smartphone users can report a "suspicious person" to the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security. The domestic counterterrorism agency's West Virginia branch, in association with the West Virginia governor's office, unveiled a new mobile app called the Suspicious Activity Reporting Application this week. "With the assistance of our citizens, important information can quickly get into the hands of our law enforcement community allowing them to provide better protection," Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said in a statement. The app is available in the Apple App Store and the Android Market. I downloaded it onto my phone. The interface is simple. After informing you that you should dial 911 for an actual emergency and asking if you want to submit your geolocation information, the app is fundamentally a camera function. You can annotate the image you capture with date and location (if you didn't enable the auto-geolocation function); additional details like a "Subject's" name, gender, eye color, "hair style" and more; and vehicle information if applicable. And you can submit your own information, allowing the authorities to contact you, or choose to submit it anonymously. Once you click the green "Submit Report" bar, the picture you've snapped and the information you've recorded goes to the West Virginia Intelligence Fusion Center, a partnership between state law enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security. "The longer you wait the less accurate eyewitness information becomes and evidence fades," the fusion center's director, Thom Kirk, said in the statement. Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide found to destroy testosterone, male fertility Posted: 03 Mar 2012 05:31 PM PST By Ethan A. Huff, NaturalNews A recent study published in the Journal of Toxicology in Vitro has found that, even at very low levels, Monsanto’s herbicide formula Roundup destroys testosterone and ultimately leads to male infertility. The findings add to the more than 25 other diseases known to be linked to Roundup, which include DNA damage, birth defects, liver dysfunction, and cancer. For their study, Emilie Clair and her colleagues from the Universite de Caen Basse-Normandie Institute of Biology in France tested the effects of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, on testicular cells from rats. Ranging in dilution from one part per million (ppm) to 10,000 ppm, which accounts for varying exposure levels in real life situations, each of the tests revealed undeniable cell toxicity caused by Roundup. Interestingly, the findings revealed that even at one ppm, Roundup was responsible for causing severe endocrine disruption that reduced testosterone levels by 35 percent. And a one ppm exposure level is considered to be extremely low, and much lower than typical exposure levels in everyday environmental situations. At higher exposure levels, Roundup was shown to induce testicular cell death in a little as one hour, and typically no later than 48 hours after exposure. And this is only acute toxicity, as the study did not analyze the long-term effects of continual and repeated exposure to Roundup, which has already been shown to seep into rivers and groundwater supplies. Ron Paul’s Slow-and-Steady Strategy Posted: 03 Mar 2012 05:26 PM PST By John Avalon, The Daily Beast Ron Paul describes his own supporters as "a tireless, irate minority." No less accurate are these observations: no supporters are more dedicated; no candidate more influential on the terms of debate; and no campaign less successful at racking up actual wins this primary season. So far, the Paul team's vaunted “caucus strategy” has failed to produce any upset victories. Every other candidate still in the race has won at least one state to date. The Paulites can boast only second-place finishes in New Hampshire, Maine, and Minnesota. As Washington State’s caucus count was coming in Saturday, Paul was again battling Rick Santorum for second place, even in this slacker-friendly state. Tea Party Patriots leader defends group after co-founder leaves claiming GOP ties Posted: 03 Mar 2012 05:20 PM PST
Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of Tea Party Patriots, defended her group and the movement after fellow co-founder Mark Meckler resigned amid frustration over the operation’s priorities and finances. A board member also left. Meckler, in interviews immediately following his resignation as national coordinator, claimed the Patriots were too close to the GOP and was wasting money in support of that alleged alliance. The comments raised core questions about the direction of the Tea Party movement in an election year. Tea Party groups were largely responsible in 2010 for helping the GOP win back the House — but only after backing outside-the-box conservative candidates who in many cases upset incumbents and establishment candidates in the primary process.
