Netflix May Increase Your Internet Fees Posted: 01 Dec 2011 02:04 PM PST By Sajid Farooq, NBCBayArea.com Just call it the Netflix effect. Internet providers across the country are discussing ways to profit off of surging Internet users, according to a report by Bloomberg. With more and more people watching movies and television online through sites like Los Gatos-based Netflix and Hulu, Internet providers are preparing to charge the heaviest users of data extra. “As more video shifts to the Web, the cable operators will inevitably align their pricing models,” Craig Moffett, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., told Bloomberg. “With the right usage-based pricing plan, they can embrace the transition instead of resisting it.” The shift may come slower to the Bay Area than other parts of the company but Moffett believes the change is going to eventually sweep the nation. Charter Communications or Time Warner Cable are considered to be the prime candidates to make the switch in charging for the amount of data used and not just the speed with which that data is delivered. WikiLeaks details surveillance industry Posted: 01 Dec 2011 02:01 PM PST From: Brisbanetimes.com.au WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has launched the website’s new project – the publication of hundreds of files detailing a global industry that gives governments tools to spy on their citizens. They reveal the activities of about 160 companies in 25 countries that develop technologies to allow the tracking and monitoring of individuals by their mobile phones, email accounts and internet browsing histories. “Today we release over 287 files documenting the reality of the international mass surveillance industry – an industry which now sells equipment to dictators and democracies alike in order to intercept entire populations,” Assange told reporters in London on Thursday. Advertisement: Story continues below Assange has been in Britain for the past year fighting extradition to Sweden for questioning on allegations of rape and sexual assault, living under tight bail conditions. His case is due to come up again on December 5. The documents on the website, http://wikileaks.org/the-spyfiles.html, include manuals for surveillance products sold to repressive Arab regimes. November Car Sales Rise at GM, Chrysler, Ford Posted: 01 Dec 2011 01:56 PM PST Written By Dunstan Prial, FoxBusiness.com Sales rose last month for all three of Detroit's biggest car makers, good news for the long-struggling industry. Chrysler reported sales in the U.S. jumped 45% in November, citing strong demand for the Jeep models, while General Motors (NYSE: GM) U.S. sales rose 7%. Ford's (NYSE: F) retail sales were up 20%. The solid numbers were widely predicted, as consumers have delayed some big ticket items, such as new homes, during the economic slump, but are slowly and warily heading back into the car market. The car makers themselves have participated in the revival, offering consumers all manner of incentives. Research firm TrueCar.com said Chrysler offered incentives worth nearly $3,300 per vehicle. Chrysler said in a statement it sold 107,172 new cars and trucks last month, up from 74,152 a year earlier. Jeep sales rose 44%, primarily on robust sales of its Compass crossover and the Liberty compact SUV. GM said it sold more than 180,000 cars and trucks, with sales of its Chevrolet Cruze leading the way. Pickups were also popular, as sales of the Chevy Silverado rose 34%. GM and Chrysler both required government bailouts in the wake of the recent financial crisis after struggling for years with declining sales and soaring costs. Massive restructurings have reduced debt and streamlined their operations. To read more, visit: http://www.foxbusiness.com/industries/2011/12/01/november-car-sales-rise/ |
The Worst Drug Fraud in History? Do You Still Trust Them with Your Life? Posted: 01 Dec 2011 01:50 PM PST By Dr. Mercola, Mercola.com Drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline has preliminarily agreed to a $3 billion settlement over the sales and marketing practices of several of its drugs, including the diabetes drug Avandia. This represents the largest federal drug-company settlement to date, surpassing the $2.3 billion paid by Pfizer in 2009 for illegally promoting off-label uses of four of its drugs. The sum, though extraordinarily large by most people’s standards, represents only a slap on the wrist to the drug giant, which assured investors the payments would be funded by “existing cash resources.” To put things into perspective, GlaxoSmithKline has a market value of more than $110 billion, according to the New York Times. This massive financial clout essentially allows them to engage in criminal behavior that they can later buy their way out of – not unlike the way you might pay for a speeding ticket. As Sidney M. Wolfe, director of Public Citizen’s health research group, told the Washington Post: “The size of the penalties, although large, are not as large as the money [the drug companies] make and so they keep doing it over again … The only way this is going to stop, or get reversed, is to greatly increase the size of the penalties or to start sending some of the executives to jail, if appropriate.” To read more, visit: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/12/01/glaxosmithkline-to-pay-damages-for-avandia.aspx |
Apple iTunes flaw ‘allowed government spying for 3 years’ Posted: 01 Dec 2011 09:56 AM PST By Christopher Williams, Telegraph.co.UK A British company called Gamma International marketed hacking software to governments that exploited the vulnerability via a bogus update to iTunes, Apple’s media player, which is installed on more than 250 million machines worldwide. The hacking software, FinFisher, is used to spy on intelligence targets' computers. It is known to be used by British agencies and earlier this year records were discovered in abandoned offices of that showed it had been offered to Egypt's feared secret police. Apple was informed about the relevant flaw in iTunes in 2008, according to Brian Krebs, a security writer, but did not patch the software until earlier this month, a delay of more than three years. "A prominent security researcher warned Apple about this dangerous vulnerability in mid-2008, yet the company waited more than 1,200 days to fix the flaw," he said in a blog post. Virginia’s Tea Party True Believer Aims Higher Posted: 01 Dec 2011 09:53 AM PST By ALEX ALTMAN | Time.com Republican sources say Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia's crusading attorney general, is "highly likely" to announce a run for governor in 2013, as the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Washington Post report. A bid could set up an interesting contested Republican primary against the state's lieutenant governor, Bill Bolling, who is expected to run to replace the state's popular Republican Governor, Bob McDonnell. The reports aren't a surprise. In the commonwealth, where the chief executive can't serve consecutive terms, the AG's perch is a way station to the governor's mansion, and Cuccinelli's high profile and strong conservative support have spurred frequent rumors that he's angling for a higher office run. Much of the speculation, however, has centered around a challenge to Democratic Senator Mark Warner in 2014. Cuccinelli told the Post in August that he was considering a Senate run. Ron Paul video hits Gingrich for ‘serial hypocrisy’ Posted: 01 Dec 2011 09:46 AM PST By Catalina Camia, USA TODAY GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul released a scathing video attacking rival Newt Gingrich for what the Texas congressman calls “serial hypocrisy” on issues such as climate change and Medicare. The ad uses Gingrich’s own words to make its point that the former House speaker is not, as the Paul campaign says, a consistent conservative. In one example, there is a clip from a commercial Gingrich made with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi that “our country must take action to address climate change.” The Paul video also reminds viewers that Gingrich has received lucrative payments from Freddie Mac and health care companies since leaving Congress in 1999. “Our campaign is making a bold move to debunk the myth that the Newt we are seeing on the 2012 campaign trail is the conservative he has been touted to be all along,” Jesse Benton, Paul’s campaign chairman, said in a statement Wednesday. Paul’s campaign said it plans to e-mail the video to its “far-reaching e-mail list of conservative voters” across the country, including in early voting states such as Iowa and New Hampshire. The campaign will also purchase banner ads on national and state websites that attract conservative readers.
