House Bill Would Criminalize Satire of TSA Posted: 16 Oct 2011 02:00 AM PDT On September 22, 2011, H.R. 3011 was introduced in the House. It is entitled the "Transportation Security Administration Authorization Act of 2011" and it contains some curious language. Two thirds of the way through the ponderous bill, in Sec. 295, we find the following: Whoever, except with the written permission of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Security (or the Director of the Federal Air Marshal Service for issues involving the Federal Air Marshal Service), knowingly uses the words 'Transportation Security Administration', 'United States Transportation Security Administration', 'Federal Air Marshal Service', 'United States Federal Air Marshal Service', 'Federal Air Marshals', the initials 'T.S.A.', 'F.A.M.S.', 'F.A.M.', or any colorable imitation of such words or initials, or the likeness of a Transportation Security Administration or Federal Air Marshal Service badge, logo, or insignia on any item of apparel, in connection with any advertisement, circular, book, pamphlet, software, or other publication, or with any play, motion picture, broadcast, telecast, or other production, in a matter that is reasonably calculated to convey the impression that the wearer of the item of apparel is acting pursuant to the legal authority of the Transportation Security Administration or Federal Air Marshal Service, or to convey the impression that such advertisement, circular, book, pamphlet, software, or other publication, or such play, motion picture, broadcast, telecast, or other production, is approved, endorsed, or authorized by the Transportation Security Administration or Federal Air Marshal Service .(Emphasis added.) South Carolina mine sparks mini-gold rush Posted: 16 Oct 2011 02:00 AM PDT By Harriet McLeod | Reuters A Canadian mining company and a tiny South Carolina town are leading what could be a modern gold rush to the southeastern United States. Romarco Minerals Inc. reopened the historic Haile Gold Mine near Kershaw, S.C., this year and expects to pour its first gold bar there in early 2014, Chief Executive Diane Garrett told Reuters this week. Once environmental impact studies and permits are complete, Haile will be the only modern gold mine east of the Mississippi River, Garrett said, and the first since the Kennecott Minerals mine closed in Ridgeway, S.C., in 1999. Based on the proven gold reserves found in samples, the Toronto company estimates it has 3.1 million ounces of gold at Haile. The mine will produce an average of 150,000 ounces of gold a year for five years, according to its website. “It sits on one of the most significant trends of gold in the United States,” Garrett said. “A lot of people had forgotten just how significant the gold production was in this area.” Romarco’s success at finding the gold left at Haile has sparked renewed industry interest in the southeastern United States. Mourdock raises $438K for Lugar primary challenge Posted: 16 Oct 2011 02:00 AM PDT
INDIANAPOLIS— The tea party-backed challenger to U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar is reporting he raised $438,000 over the past three months. Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock’s campaign said Thursday that it closed the last federal reporting period with $300,000 in the bank. Mourdock’s haul for the quarter is roughly half of what Lugar pulled down. Lugar’s campaign said Wednesday it raised $840,000 in the same period and had $3.8 million in the bank. Mourdock lent his campaign $100,000, in the last quarter inflating his haul significantly. He also secured endorsements from two national conservative groups that may spend heavily in the state. Sedo Gets Exclusive Listing on TeaParty.com Domain Name Posted: 16 Oct 2011 02:00 AM PDT Just about a month ago, Bloomberg BusinessWeek posted an article about TeaParty.com and how the domain name could generate quite a bit of money for its rock band owners. The gist of the article was that "interest in teaparty.com is intense now but could plummet if the domain's owners hang on too long." With the next presidential election fast approaching, it seems that the owners are under the same impression. According to a news release this morning, TeaParty.com is now listed for sale exclusively at Sedo. Based on the TeaParty.com sales page at Sedo, it appears that Dave Evanson is the broker for this domain name. The BusinessWeek article created even more interest in the domain name, and the owners thought it would be a good time to try and sell it. "We were floored by the worldwide press and interest in our domain name teaparty.com that soon followed the initial story in Businessweek. After being overwhelmed by the multiple offers that were arriving daily, we thought it was prudent to seek out the best brokerage to help represent the band, and Sedo was the clear choice," said Stuart Chatwood, bass player of The Tea Party. Posted: 16 Oct 2011 02:00 AM PDT By Brent Baker | Newsbusters.com Left-wing actor Sean Penn slimed the Tea Party as motivated by racism, charging on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight on Friday evening that an impediment to President Obama's success is "what I call the 'Get the N-word out of the White House party,' the Tea Party." At a time when Herman Cain tops polls of Republican primary voters, Penn proceeded to allege, without citing any evidence, that "there's a big bubble coming out of their heads saying, you know, 'can we just lynch him?'" In between Penn's two jabs intended to discredit the Tea Party, Piers Morgan helpfully boasted of how actor Morgan Freeman, on his show three weeks ago, "was very passionate about that very subject, saying there are elements of the Tea Party who just, as he said, want to get the black man out of the White House. He said it on this show." Indeed, Piers Morgan's program has become the place for celebrities to disparage the Tea Party. As recounted by NB's Noel Sheppard, on the September 23 show, Morgan Freeman asserted the Tea Party's attitude is "we're going to do whatever we can to get this black man outta here." The night before, actor Alan Cumming of The Good Wife, denounced the Tea Party as driven by "homophobia and racism." Bloomberg Calls Wall Street “Vitally Important,” Criticizes Protests Posted: 15 Oct 2011 08:12 AM PDT Mayor Michael Bloomberg criticized the "Occupy Wall Street" protesters and the officials who support them on his radio show Friday just hours after Brookfield Properties, owner of Zuccotti Park, backed off of their plans to clean out the encampment. NY1's Courtney Gross filed the following report. "Occupy Wall Street" protesters may get to stay put in Zuccotti Park for now, but they aren’t currying much favor with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “The bottom line is, I don’t necessarily agree with their message or their targets. Here in New York City, the Wall Street industry is a vitally important industry. Its tax dollars are how we pay our cops and firefighters and teachers. You see some of the municipal unions trying to help the protesters. Helping them is one thing. Destroying our tax base just isn’t good,” said Bloomberg on his radio show. The mayor also took a stab at politicians who support the movement. “Brookfield got lots of calls from many elected officials threatening them and saying if you don’t stop this, we’ll make your life more difficult. If those elected officials spent half as much time trying to promote the city and get jobs to come here, we would go a long ways towards answering the concerns of the protesters,” said Bloomberg. The mayor said he was notified by the property manager’s decision to hold off on the clean sweep at midnight on Friday. The public didn’t get word for seven hours after huge crowds descended downtown. Tea Party founder backs Occupy Wall Street Posted: 15 Oct 2011 08:04 AM PDT Karl Denninger was one of the founders of the Tea Party back just a few years ago when some concerned conservatives wanted to fire back at the government for what they said was unjust practices. Is it right to make comparisons between the two groups? Denninger says that, yes, to some degree the comparisons are indeed accurate. The Occupy movement, however, can learn from some of the mistakes that he says the Tea Party succumbed to. "The problem with protests and the political process is that it is very easy, no matter how big the protests is, for the politicians to simply wait for the people to go home," says Denninger. "Then they can ignore you." With the problems posing Americans as big as they are though, said Denninger, it makes sense that so many citizens are joining the movement. Denninger acknowledged that much of America has lost jobs and homes and seen the stock market crash twice in only a matter of years. "People are saying, 'You know what? I know I've gotten screwed by all of this but I don't know how I got screwed. I just know that it happened. And it all came from New York and Washington DC." With the Occupy movement as broad as it is, some critics say the chaos and lack of a solid plan will be the downfall of the movement. Denninger says, though, that that could actually give the group leverage. And as the movement spreads from coast-to-coast and now abroad, perhaps he is exactly right. Does Romney’s rise challenge tea party’s clout in GOP? Posted: 15 Oct 2011 07:46 AM PDT
WASHINGTON—Mitt Romney’s early success in the Republican presidential race is challenging the tea party’s clout. Will it continue to pull the GOP sharply right? Will it slowly fade? Or merge with mainstream Republican elements in a nod to pragmatism, something it’s hardly known for? On the surface, Romney’s strength seems at odds with the tea party’s fiery success in ousting Republicans seen as compromisers, and in making the House GOP caucus more ideological, even when its leaders plead for flexibility. Romney defends the government’s 2008 bank bailouts, plus the mandated health insurance he initiated as Massachusetts governor. He says he can work with “good Democrats.” Although he later changed, Romney once supported abortion rights, gun control and gay rights. These positions run counter to the beliefs and goals of many tea party activists scattered throughout the country. Yet Romney is faring better in polls, fundraising and debates than are contenders with stronger tea party credentials, including Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry. Several Republican strategists, and even some tea party leaders, say they aren’t surprised or alarmed. Their overarching goal is to defeat President Barack Obama next year, they say, and if Romney is best-positioned to do that, they’ll endure his shortcomings. “The perception that tea partyers are ideological purists is wrong,” said Sal Russo, a long-time Republican strategist in California and a leader of the Tea Party Express. “We are a broad-based movement,” he said, “and we are looking to win in 2012.” To read more, visit: http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2011/10/15/romneys_rise_challenges_tea_partys_clout_in_gop/ |
Hotel Fires Man Who Wore US Flag Pin Posted: 15 Oct 2011 07:42 AM PDT ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Just before firing Sean May the day after he was sent home for wearing an American flag pin, the Casa Monica Hotel answered some questions in an email Friday. “The Casa Monica Hotel located in St. Augustine, Florida, is an American-based, homegrown historic hotel,” the email reads. “The property reflects its pride in America and great patriotism by flying the Stars and Stripes high over the hotel. The American flag greets every guest and employee with its symbolism of our belief in this great country.” “However, our employee handbook clearly states, ‘No other buttons, badges, pins or insignias of any kind are permitted to be worn.’ No matter an individual’s national preference, political views or religious affiliation, it is a standard regulation which ensures equality for all Grand Performers (employees).” The Casa Monica Hotel’s response has angered many people, some who say the policy is backwards and that American flag pins shouldn’t be banned but should be embraced. “The dress code should include a lapel pin for everybody,” said Bruce Whalen, who served in the Air Force and takes this incident personally. Whalen said he is so offended by the hotel’s policy that he’s writing to the hotel, along with his entire email list, and he’s calling on friends to boycott the hotel and its parent company. “Anybody who takes a chance on his livelihood to take a stand for patriotism is a hero and should be treated like a hero,” Whalen said. Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 Plan Straight Out of SimCity? Posted: 15 Oct 2011 07:38 AM PDT By Paul Tassi, Forbes.com Rarely does the world of politics cross over into my little video game corner here, much less something as significant as the presidential race, but I woke up today with a note in my inbox that claimed candidate Herman Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan might have had gaming inspiration. As it turns out, in Maxis's SimCity 4, the default tax rates actually all start at 9% for commercial taxes, 9% for industrial and 9% for residential. It's not exactly corporate, income and sales, but it's close enough to be noticeable. The Huffington Post made the connection, and contacted Maxis for comment. Senior producer Kip Katsarelis seemed bemused.
Cain cites his own economic advisors for coming up with the plan, not the video game, but one has to wonder, if it's right for SimCity, is it right for America? My thriving virtual metropolis would at least seem to think so. To read more, visit: http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2011/10/14/herman-cains-9-9-9-plan-straight-out-of-simcity/ |
