Chris Christie won’t run for president in 2012 Posted: 04 Oct 2011 10:34 AM PDT By JONATHAN MARTIN & MAGGIE HABERMAN & ALEXANDER BURNS | Politico New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie formally announced that he wasn't going to join the presidential race on Tuesday, saying he'd come back to his original feeling about staying out despite reconsidering in recent days. "In the end, what I've always felt was the right decision remains the right decision today. Now is not my time. I have a commitment to the people of New Jersey that I simply will not abandon," Christie said, speaking to reporters in Trenton. "People sent me to Trenton to get a job done, and I'm just not prepared to walk away." Christie repeated that he believed that Obama has "failed the leadership test." But he pledged to stay focused on his job as governor: "New Jersey, whether you like it or not, you're stuck with me." Christie said he'd felt obligated to reconsider after being approached by so many people in recent weeks, but his decision is final, explaining, "I think they understand that this was a longshot for them to change my mind in the first place." Christie left the door open to a possible endorsement of another candidate, but made no commitments. He also brushed off talk of running for vice president, saying: "I don't think there's anybody in America who'd say my personality is best-suited to being a number two." ‘Tea party’ remains resolute, with 2012 in view Posted: 04 Oct 2011 10:32 AM PDT By Kathleen Hennessey, The Los Angeles Times Reporting from Washington— GOP leaders in Congress often seem to be bending over backward to please the most conservative flank of their party — but the gymnastics don’t appear to be doing the trick. Like the vast majority of Americans, “tea party” activists say they disapprove of the way Congress is doing its job, but the reasons they offer are notably different than those heard elsewhere. In interviews, leading activists in several states complained that Republicans were too quick to compromise and too accommodating to Democrats. They complained not of an insufficient effort on job creation, the top concern voiced by most Americans, but an inadequate attempt to rethink the role of government. They urged lawmakers to be more aggressive and stick to a pattern of brinkmanship that has brought spending cuts, along with repeated threats of federal shutdown and one near-default. While most Americans are crying uncle, these grass-roots conservatives are pushing for more. In key races around the country, tea party activists already are backing primary challenges to some established Republican members of the House and Senate with others threatened. “If there’s one common thread that I hear no matter where I am, it’s people saying, ‘The issue is we need to start changing out the people; we need new people in there,’ ” said Dawn Wildman, a tea party organizer in San Diego. |
New Space Venture Could Bring Every City On Earth Within Two Hours Travel Posted: 04 Oct 2011 10:29 AM PDT From MyFOXNY.com AMSTELVEEN, The Netherland – A Formula One tycoon is linking up with KLM, the Dutch airline, to develop spacecraft that could bring every city on Earth within two hours’ travel time. A British passenger was the first to buy a $93,000 ticket for a ride on an early version of the craft, providing suborbital flights for space tourists. Michiel Mol, 42, a Dutchman who co-owns the Force India Formula One team and made his fortune in computer software, said over the weekend, “Being able to travel from London to Sydney in an hour and 45 minutes, that is the future. It is also the reason why KLM joined our firm [Space Expedition Curacao, or SXC] as a partner.” Peter Hartman, chief executive of the airline, said, “KLM supports this innovative project. The SXC program’s aim is to make space flights — the future of travel — accessible in a responsible and sustainable way by developing and promoting new technologies.” Sir Richard Branson intends to become the first private space tourism operator, booking seats at $200,000 each for suborbital flights on his Virgin Galactic vehicles, which he hopes to begin launching as soon as 2012. Durbin Taxes Banks through Debit Fees Posted: 04 Oct 2011 10:26 AM PDT Recently, Bank of America announced what many other banks have been doing as a pilot program, which is to charge consumers a monthly fee (five dollars a month) for the debit card that they have issued. Senator Durbin was outraged at Bank of America for charging this fee to consumers for a service they provide. The Federal Reserve Board studied the profitability of debit cards for the banking industry and they settled on the 22 cent fee cap for banks to earn if they are 10 billion or larger for their interchange fees. Why is a 9 billion dollar bank different than an 11 billion dollar bank? Why does Dick Durbin get to decide what is a fair profit? Why does Dodd Frank give the Federal Reserve Board the power to decide what a bank should make when offering this service? If Bank of America is charging too much for the debit card, consumers will not use it. They will go to another bank. If Bank of America's interchange fee is too high; merchants canrefuse to accept it. Why can't Americans and American businesses decide what to buy and what not to buy and at what price? Is the government going to use this example to decide what banks can charge clients for loans, checking accounts or other services? |
Starbucks to Begin Collecting Donations to Stimulate U.S. Job Growth Posted: 04 Oct 2011 10:18 AM PDT By AP, CBS Seattle PORTLAND, Ore. — Starbucks hopes customers will be willing to pay at least $5 more when they stop in for their morning cup of Joe. Starting Nov. 1, Starbucks will begin collecting donations of $5 or more from customers to stimulate U.S. job growth through its "Jobs for USA" program. The Seattle-based coffee chain is collaborating with the Opportunity Finance Network, a nonprofit that works with nearly 200 community development financial institutions to provide loans to small businesses and community groups. Starbucks says 100 percent of the donations will go toward loans for firms and organizations that can add jobs or stem job losses. Starbucks, which pioneered how Americans drink coffee, declined to estimate how much money it plans to raise, but millions of people visit its nearly 7,000 company-owned U.S. stores each day. Customers who give will get a red, white and blue wristband that says "Indivisible." "This is about using Starbuck's scale for good," said Howard Schultz, Starbucks Corp.'s CEO. Obama impeachment a possibility, says Ron Paul Posted: 04 Oct 2011 10:16 AM PDT By DAN HIRSCHHORN | Politico Ron Paul said Monday that President Barack Obama's targeted killing of Anwar al-Awlaki might be an impeachable offense. Asked at a Manchester, N.H. town hall meeting about last week's killing of the American-born Al Qaeda leader, the Texas congressman said impeachment would be "possible," but that he wants to know more about how the administration "flouted the law." Paul called the killing a movement toward "tyranny." "I put responsibility on the president because this is obviously a step in the wrong direction," Paul said. "We have just totally disrespected the Constitution." The comments once again put Paul at odds with his Republican rivals over foreign policy and the war on terror in the latest indication of how his foreign policy views stray far from Republican orthodoxy even in a GOP that's taken on an increasingly isolationist bent. Candidates like Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney — who included the president in a list of people he commended in a statement released Friday — have generally been supportive of the killing. No one else in the field has spoken out against it. To read more, visit: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1011/65035.html |
Cell Phone Industry to Sue SF on Radiation Law Posted: 04 Oct 2011 10:12 AM PDT
A trade group representing the cell phone industry said Tuesday it will file a federal lawsuit challenging San Francisco’s new law to provide radiation information. The suit comes the week The City’s new controversial ordinance went live and after months of debate and publicity. The ordinance requires cell phone retailers to display information about the amount of radiation emanating from cell phones and to provide fact sheets to customers who ask for them. The CTIA said it plans to file its suit because the ordinance is trumped by federal law and it violates the industry’s First Amendment rights. The law has been discussed and debated in the City for almost two years with former San Francisco mayor and now California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom pushing its adoption. Rather Than Protecting Free Speech, Media Protects Obama Posted: 04 Oct 2011 10:09 AM PDT By Meredith Jessup, The Blaze Why is Hank Williams Jr. being punished for having an opinion? As we've reported, Williams came under fire Monday after criticizing President Obama and House Speaker Boehner's recent golf match. The two ideologically opposed politicians meeting on the golf course was a mistake, Williams noted. "That would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu," he said. Note the actual comparison going on here: In no way is Williams saying "Obama is Hitler," nor saying that the president is even like Hitler. In fact, since Williams does not clarify his remarks further, one could claim that Boehner was just as representative of Hitler in the hypothetical scenario. Instead, the media was quick to (wrongfully) attack Williams for comparing the ideological rift between Boehner and Obama to Hitler and Netanyahu. This 4th grade logic was apparently too advanced for most in the media, including Fox News' Brian Kilmeade and Gretchen Carlson who were among the first to rebuff Williams. ESPN later pulled Williams' Monday Night Football introduction and also quickly distanced themselves:
