Jobless Rate Stays Stuck at 9.1 Percent Despite Uptick Posted: 07 Oct 2011 07:29 AM PDT The nation’s unemployment rate remained stuck at 9.1 percent in September despite an uptick in hiring, as the latest labor report fueled debate in Washington over how to jump-start an economy that President Obama acknowledges has weakened since the start of the year. The Labor Department said Friday employers added 130,000 jobs in September. Nearly half of those gains, though, were due to the rehiring of 45,000 Verizon employees who had gone on strike. The hiring did little to draw down the number of unemployed in America, estimated at about 14 million. Since April, the jobless rate has hovered between 9 and 9.2 percent. The report quickly was pulled into the debate on Capitol Hill over whether to pursue Obama’s $447 billion jobs bill — a mix of tax relief, infrastructure spending and other measures — or pursue a different route. House Speaker John Boehner said the “sad numbers” show the federal government cannot keep pursuing policies of “more Washington spending, threats of higher taxes on small businesses, and excessive government regulations.” He urged both sides to find “common ground on common-sense solutions.” “The fact that our unemployment rate remains this high — over two and a half years after Democrats’ trillion-dollar stimulus plan — is a clear signal that we need to change course,” said Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. To read more, visit: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/10/07/jobless-rate-stays-stuck-at-1-percent-despite-uptick-in-hiring/ |
Feds to design health insurance for the masses Posted: 07 Oct 2011 07:26 AM PDT By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR, AP WASHINGTON – The federal government is taking on a crucial new role in the nation’s health care, designing a basic benefits package for millions of privately insured Americans. A framework for the Obama administration was released Friday. The report by independent experts from the Institute of Medicine lays out guidelines for deciding what to include in the new “essential benefits package,” and how to keep it affordable for small businesses and taxpayers, as well as scientifically up to date. The advisers recommended that the package be built on mid-tier health plans currently offered by small employers, expanded to include certain services such as mental health, and squeezed into a budget. They did not spell out a list of services to cover, but they did say that treatments should be cost-effective. Until now, designing benefits has been the job of insurers, employers and states. But the new health care law requires insurance companies to provide at least the federally approved package if they want to sell to small businesses, families and individuals through new state markets set to open in 2014. GOP threatens to strip favored status from New Hampshire Posted: 07 Oct 2011 07:15 AM PDT By Cameron Joseph, The Hill Republicans are pressuring New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner to put his state’s primary late enough to allow Iowa’s caucus to take place in January, and are threatening the state with the loss of its favored status as the first-in-the-nation primary if he doesn’t do so. Gardner, who is not affiliated with a political party, has the sole authority to set New Hampshire’s primary date. A spokesman in his office said he has no plans to make a decision before next week. The Republican primary calendar was scrambled when Florida decided to move its primary up to Jan. 31, triggering a domino effect where the four early-voting states had to move their primaries and caucuses up. South Carolina scheduled its primary for Jan. 21, and Nevada announced Wednesday night that it would hold its caucus Jan. 14. Tea party activists allowed to use space in FL Senate building Posted: 07 Oct 2011 07:11 AM PDT
TALLAHASSEE — Florida tea party leaders Thursday proudly announced the grand opening of their "Tallahassee headquarters" for the upcoming legislative session. The Tea Party Network — a group of 70 Florida tea party and 9/12 groups — used the conference room to educate new volunteers about their movement's talking points and to meet with elected officials who stopped by. They say keeping a space at the Capitol will help them during the hectic days of session, when they need to react with speed to lawmakers' surprise amendments and unfavorable votes. "Legislation can change like that," said Tea Party Network chairwoman Patricia Sullivan, snapping her fingers. "It's just a wise use of our volunteers' time." Still, the group's news release did not answer the question: Can a political party set up shop in the Capitol? Well, sort of. Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, said groups frequently use vacant meeting rooms during legislative sessions, but he clarified that Room 227 does not belong to the Tea Party Network. "They are not going to have a full-time office, no, in the Florida Senate," Haridopolos said. To read more, visit: http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/10/06/2442394/tea-party-activists-allowed-to.html |
The Revolution Against the Federal Reserve Starts Now Posted: 06 Oct 2011 11:14 AM PDT From: Infowars Press Release Public sentiment has shifted– against the trends of Washington and Wall Street– and now, against the private Federal Reserve bank which controls or influences so much of the world's finances. Where as only a few years ago many Americans were unaware of the true nature of the shadowy organization, recent polls confirm that the public overwhelmingly wants to audit and even abolish the Federal Reserve bank. The momentum for a second American revolution is stirring, but the establishment is working overtime to steer the public's anger into easy controlled avenues and big government solutions. Instead, by striking at the root of the true problems, we can attempt to reign in the predatory banking powers that plague our nation and begin to restore the Republic. The Federal Reserve banking system is at the root of that problem and a perpetual impediment towards ending the global economic crisis that continues to grow. Join Alex Jones to "occupy" the Dallas Federal Reserve, or take the message to a Fed branch near you [see dates and times below]. We must start now by focusing media and political attention on this issue, and through our presence at these banks, start brushfires in the minds of men that will tip the momentum in favor of liberty and independence for all. Remembering Steve Jobs, Entrepreneur Extraordinaire Posted: 06 Oct 2011 10:37 AM PDT By Dr. Craig Columbus, NJToday.net As an entrepreneurship educator, studying the co-founder and former CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, has been one of the great pleasures of the profession. At times, it even feels like an indulgence given the difficulty future technology leaders will surely have in replicating his contributions. In an industry where prices were continually being pushed down, Apple products were able to command a premium. Jobs had the ability to use his experience with Pixar and Disney to crack the code for a viable digital-rights business when no one else could. His capacity to identify the interconnectedness of Apple products, forming its own ecosystem, was unprecedented. There are so many teaching lessons in the business strategy that Mr. Jobs oversaw: his ability to draw inspiration from other industries and sources, his willingness to shrink rather than constantly grow product lines, his unwillingness to rely on commoditized marketing studies or focus groups, his obsession with simplicity and functionality, his decision to accept a $1-a-year salary in order to place the emphasis on value creation. However, my favorite Steve Jobs teaching lesson is not about his incredible leadership or innovations but rather about failure and redemption. Students today can hardly imagine a world in which Apple was a struggling company, flailing to establish its identity in the mid-1990s. Too often, young people only see success as a straight-line endeavor. And while some of Apple's struggles were the result of flawed strategy and execution of its then-CEOs John Sculley and Gilbert Amelio, some were self-inflicted by Mr. Jobs himself. Election 2012: Generic Republican 47%, Obama 41% Posted: 06 Oct 2011 10:30 AM PDT A generic Republican now holds a six-point advantage over President Obama in a hypothetical 2012 match-up for the week ending Sunday, October 2. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely U.S. Voters finds the generic Republican earning 47% support, while the president picks up 41% of the vote. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and eight percent (8%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.) Last week, the generic Republican and the president were essentially tied. Since weekly tracking began in early May, the Republican has earned 43% to 49% support, while the president has picked up 40% to 45% of the vote. Rasmussen Reports will provide new data on this generic matchup each week until the field of prospective Republican nominees narrows to a few serious contenders. President Obama leads most of the current GOP hopefuls aside from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who is not running, and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who he's essentially tied with. Secret panel can put Americans on “kill list” Posted: 06 Oct 2011 10:26 AM PDT By Mark Hosenball | Reuters WASHINGTON – American militants like Anwar al-Awlaki are placed on a kill or capture list by a secretive panel of senior government officials, which then informs the president of its decisions, according to officials. There is no public record of the operations or decisions of the panel, which is a subset of the White House’s National Security Council, several current and former officials said. Neither is there any law establishing its existence or setting out the rules by which it is supposed to operate. The panel was behind the decision to add Awlaki, a U.S.-born militant preacher with alleged al Qaeda connections, to the target list. He was killed by a CIA drone strike in Yemen late last month. The role of the president in ordering or ratifying a decision to target a citizen is fuzzy. White House spokesman Tommy Vietor declined to discuss anything about the process. Current and former officials said that to the best of their knowledge, Awlaki, who the White House said was a key figure in al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, al Qaeda’s Yemen-based affiliate, had been the only American put on a government list targeting people for capture or death due to their alleged involvement with militants. The White House is portraying the killing of Awlaki as a demonstration of President Barack Obama’s toughness toward militants who threaten the United States. But the process that led to Awlaki’s killing has drawn fierce criticism from both the political left and right. In an ironic turn, Obama, who ran for president denouncing predecessor George W. Bush’s expansive use of executive power in his “war on terrorism,” is being attacked in some quarters for using similar tactics. They include secret legal justifications and undisclosed intelligence assessments. To read more, visit: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/05/us-cia-killlist-idUSTRE79475C20111005 |
