BlackBerry Service Disruptions Continue For Second Day Posted: 11 Oct 2011 09:28 AM PDT BlackBerry users across Europe, the Middle East and Africa were hit with service disruptions to their smartphones for a second day after an unexplained glitch cut off Internet and messaging services for large numbers of users around the world. Research in Motion Ltd., which makes BlackBerry devices, said Tuesday morning that services were operating normally and the issue responsible for delays in subscriber services a day earlier had been resolved. But Blackberry’s popular messaging service was not fully operational in Europe, with users reporting issues sending and receiving messages. In Britain, Vodafone UK told customers via Twitter that service was not fully restored. T-Mobile UK blamed “a European-wide outage on the BlackBerry network” which it said was affecting all mobile operators. Just days before the Durbin Amendment went into effect on Oct. 1, Bank of America announced it would charge consumers a $5 monthly fee for using their debt card. Part of the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul package, the amendment limits the fees that banks can charge merchants when a consumer swipes their debit card to 24 cents, from 44 cents. Although it seems like only a few pennies lost on every swipe, the numbers will start to add up for the banks. According to the Heritage Foundation, the total potential loss could amount to $12 billion. Banks have long opposed the amendment warning that if the fees were lowered, the difference would have to come from somewhere else. The $5 fee is designed to make up for Bank of America’s (BAC) loss of revenue. Experts note that that a customer making 25 debit card transactions a month would lead the bank to lose $5 it would have made before the Durbin Amendment. Bank of America is not alone: many of the larger banks, including Wells Fargo and Sun Trust, are making up for lost revenue by charging for debit card use, the cost ranging anywhere from $3 to $5 per month. Is Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 tax plan fair? Posted: 11 Oct 2011 09:18 AM PDT WASHINGTON – Herman Cain’s standing in the polls in the race for the Republican presidential nomination has risen with the growing popularity of his 9-9-9 tax plan, which has become such a signature issue for the former pizza company executive that the crowds who come to see him speak routinely cheer at its mention. The plan, which calls for a 9% income tax, 9% national sales tax and 9% corporate income tax, would create tax equality and stabilize federal finances, Cain said. “And it’ll save all of us, collectively, $430 billion a year that we spend to fill out the stupid tax code — 9-9-9,” Cain said at a speech in Washington last week. Not so fast, say tax experts from all parts of the political spectrum. While Cain’s plan has an appealing simplicity to Americans frustrated with the nation’s labyrinthine tax system, it would dump a much heavier tax burden on low-income citizens. Cain’s campaign has not released enough specifics about the plan to determine whether it is progressive or regressive, said Will McBride, an economist with the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, but “any sort of movement to a consumption tax, which this is with the sales tax, is a move away from progressivity.” “Warren Buffett can’t reasonably spend $40 million a year on consumption,” he said. “It just happens that folks that make more money, they consume less of their income.” To read more, visit: http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/taxes/story/2011-10-10/herman-cain-9-9-9-tax-plan/50723976/1 |
Tea party group slams Occupy Wall Street; arrests grow Posted: 11 Oct 2011 09:14 AM PDT By James Oliphant, Los Angeles Times As the Occupy Wall Street movement continues to spread—with massive arrests Monday night in Boston—the tea party wants you to know that the progressive protests have nothing in common with its own grass-roots effort. First, the arrests: About 100 people were arrested by police Monday evening in Boston, according to local news affiliates, after they refused to leave an off-limits area outside of the Dewey Square section of the city. Local representatives of the intentionally disorganized movement said the police overreacted. The police claimed that "anarchists" had seized control of the demonstrations. Meanwhile, in New York City, where all of this started, protesters are planning to march on the homes of News Corp.'s Rupert Murdoch and tea party backer David Koch, TPM reports. They also may target the homes of JPMorgan Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon, real estate developer Howard Milstein and hedge fund manager John Paulson. The protests to date have largely been confined to Lower Manhattan, but the demonstrations, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, will mark a thrust into Midtown. (It also won't be a great time for non-protesters to take the subway.) On Monday, New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said the protesters could remain camped in the park near Wall Street, where they have been stationed for weeks, as long as they wanted. But it remains to be seen how the city reacts to the Midtown march. To read more, visit: http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-tea-party-occupy-0111011,0,4839479.story?track=rss |
Paula Deen: Michelle Obama likes fried food too Posted: 11 Oct 2011 09:10 AM PDT By: Nikki Schwab And Katy Adams | The Examiner When Paula Deen met Michelle Obama, it wasn’t exactly the queen of butter versus the first lady of garden greens. Deen, known for her delicious not-so-good-for-you recipes like Gooey Butter Cake, said the two women had more in common than you might expect. “Well, I did a show with Michelle and I just loved being with her,” Deen told Yeas & Nays. “She probably ate more than any other guest I’ve ever had on the show —she kept eating even during commercials.” Deen taught Obama how to fry shrimp during a TV segment in September before the 2008 presidential election. “You know what their favorite foods are — it’s hot wings, you know, those kinds of foods that are not necessarily top-of-the-list healthy foods, so she’s no different than the rest of us,” Deen said. “We love those kinds of foods, we just know that we can’t eat them everyday.” The culinary superstar also said she supported the first lady’s initiative to get more Americans gardening. “So I love that,” she said. “I was really happy to see her encouraging children, you know, to plant their little gardens.” To read more, visit: http://washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/yeas-nays/2011/10/paula-dean-michelle-obama-likes-fried-food-too |
Calif. Governor Veto Allows Warrantless Cellphone Searches Posted: 11 Oct 2011 09:08 AM PDT By David Kravets, Wired.com California Gov. Jerry Brown is vetoing legislation requiring police to obtain a court warrant to search the mobile phones of suspects at the time of any arrest. The Sunday veto means that when police arrest anybody in the Golden State, they may search that person's mobile phone — which in the digital age likely means the contents of persons' e-mail, call records, text messages, photos, banking activity, cloud-storage services, and even where the phone has traveled. Police across the country are given wide latitude to search persons incident to an arrest based on the premise of officer safety. Now the nation's states are beginning to grapple with the warrantless searches of mobile phones done at the time of an arrest. Brown's veto message abdicated responsibility for protecting the rights of Californians and ignored calls from civil liberties groups and this publication to sign the bill — saying only that the issue is too complicated for him to make a decision about. He cites a recent California Supreme Court decision upholding the warrantless searches of people incident to an arrest. In his brief message, he also doesn't say whether it's a good idea or not. US crime predicting technology tests draw Minority Report comparisons Posted: 11 Oct 2011 09:03 AM PDT By Nick Allen, Telegraph UK Using cameras and sensors the “pre-crime” system measures and tracks changes in a person’s body movements, the pitch of their voice and the rhythm of their speech. It also monitors breathing patterns, eye movements, blink rate and alterations in body heat, which are used to assess an individual’s likelihood to commit a crime. The Future Attribute Screening Technology (FAST) programme is already being tested on a group of government employees who volunteered to act as guinea pigs. The first test was carried out at an undisclosed location in the north-eastern United States. According to the Department of Homeland Security it was not at an airport, but was at a “large venue that is a suitable substitute for an operational setting”.
