Tea Party requests a hearing on Helena’s gun law

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 12:09 PM PDT

The Lewis & Clark Conservative Tea Party wants the City Commission to review Helena’s gun law.

Currently the City’s ordinance prohibits carrying a loaded weapon on public property.

At Monday night’s Commission meeting Tea Party leader Tim Ravndal and a handful of other area residents formally placed their request before the City Commission.

Ravndal says he believes there are several issues with Helena’s ordinance. He wants the City Commission to look at allowing loaded weapons in public places. He also says any ordinance which restricts the public’s right to carry firearms should be changed.

In a letter dated May 13th Ravndal requested a public hearing to address his concerns. The City denied his request and told him the proper venue to challenge this ordinance is through either the legislative process or through the court system.

“This ordinance and others enacted by the City of Helena have been amended and or repealed by the City Commission without going to the courts of Montana,” Ravndal told the Commission.

Is a vote to eliminate tax breaks actually a tax hike?

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 12:05 PM PDT

By Mark Trumbull, CSMonitor.com

An expected Senate vote on ethanol subsidies Tuesday represents a test of a larger issue: Can Republicans embrace a view of tax loopholes that finds common ground with Democrats?

If so, that shared viewpoint could help build broader consensus on fiscal reforms designed to bring down federal budget deficits over time. If not, getting to a bipartisan “yes” on any major deficit-reduction would be much harder.

The point at issue goes beyond ethanol and the debate over whether corporations should reap a tax credit for putting the corn-based fuel into US gasoline. The deeper issue is a philosophical one: If Congress takes away a tax subsidy, should that count as a tax hike?

Many Republicans argue that any move that allows more tax revenue to arrive at the US Treasury is a tax increase. Killing the ethanol subsidy is a great idea, many say, but it should be done in a “revenue-neutral” manner, with new tax cuts designed to offset the change.

Others in Congress – including some Republicans – argue that rolling back this kind of spending is a good thing, even if the resulting boost to federal revenues is not offset by new tax cuts.

The poster children of this great tax debate are antitax lobbyist Grover Norquist and Sen. Tom Coburn (R) of Oklahoma.

Nebraska Tea Party leader claims state Banking Department harassed him

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

BY JoANNE YOUNG, Journalstar.com

A financial adviser who has become the face of the tea party in Nebraska says his politics led to harassment by the state Banking Department.

And it has cost his business — Bob Bennie Wealth Management Inc. — more than $1 million.

Banking Department officials say their contacts and investigations of Bennie’s business practices were precipitated by his and his affiliate’s business actions and had nothing to do with politics.

It started in February 2010, Bennie said, after an article in the Journal Star about the tea party movement in Nebraska, in which he was quoted extensively.

In that article, Bennie discussed his political beliefs and called President Barack Obama a communist. That’s when his business troubles began, he said.

He hadn’t had much contact with the Banking Department during his 16 years in business, he said. His past record has been free from judgments, written reprimands, suspensions, fines or disciplinary actions, he said. But shortly after the article appeared, he received an inquiry from the department.

FBI Agents Now Allowed to Investigate Anyone Without Evidence of a Crime

The FBI has now given agents the authority to snoop on anyone, for any reason, even without evidence of criminal activity. Catherine Herridge explains the policy changes, which an FBI spokesman has characterized as "tweaks," saying that they'd give FBI agents more leeway to look into organizations or individual suspects without strong evidence of criminal behavior.

These changes are also drawing criticism from civil liberties groups, with the ACLU saying the policies present new questions about whether agents are crossing the line and abusing their powers.

Facebook Lost U.S. Users Last Month

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Facebook is approaching 700 million members but its growth is slowing and it lost users in the United States and Canada last month, the Inside Facebook website said Monday.

Facebook had 687 million members at the start of June, said Inside Facebook, which closely tracks developments and trends at the Palo Alto, California-based social network.

Facebook itself does not regularly release membership figures except to announce milestones such as when it crossed 500 million users in July of last year.

Inside Facebook said overall growth at the social networking giant “has been lower than normal for the second month straight, which is unusual.”

Facebook gained 11.8 million members in May and 13.9 million in April — down from the usual 20 million new users a month seen in previous months, it said.

“While there have been a few months that have registered lower growth numbers, they have not been back to back,” it said.

Bachmann Brings Flair, Tea Party Clout to GOP Race

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 11:49 AM PDT

By BRIAN BAKST, ABC News

One hand clutches a crisply folded U.S. flag with a concealed weapons certification protruding; the other slides discreetly into a denim coat pocket. Behind the beaming state lawmaker, a silhouette target with bullet holes square in the chest. Next to her nameplate, a “No New Taxes!” sticker.

The 2005 photo captures Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann’s essence.

In Bachmann’s quick rise from state lawmaker to unofficial tea party ambassador in Washington, her brazen style has kept Republican leaders on edge and appealed to those in the GOP searching for a fresh, unfettered voice. She relishes the spotlight and seldom cedes ground.

Her unpredictable edge was on display during Monday night’s GOP presidential debate in New Hampshire when, out of the blue, she announced that she had filed papers to be an official candidate for the Republican nomination.

“I do what I say and I say what I mean and I don’t change what I do based on a political wind or desire to necessarily move up the next ladder,” Bachmann told The Associated Press this spring in an interview in which she stressed her eagerness to “take on not only the opposing party but my own party as well to do what I think is right.”

Known for piercing and sometimes inaccurate commentary, she regularly aggravates political foes and provides ample fodder to late-night comics. She once falsely claimed taxpayers would be stuck with a $200 million per day tab for Democratic President Barack Obama’s trip to India. She mistakenly identified New Hampshire as the site of the Revolutionary War’s opening shots. (That key American moment occurred in Massachusetts.)

Florida Tea Party groups says liberal MoveOn group also responsible for hefty bill

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 11:45 AM PDT

By Jeff Winkler, The Daily Caller

Local MoveOn.org protestors are getting a free ride and the negative press their conservative counterparts have gotten is "baseless political mudslinging," according to Florida Tea Partiers pushing back against accusations the group is skipping out on a hefty bill.

The South Florida Tea Party has been taking flak recently for an unpaid $6,000 bill issued by the city of Boca Raton, Fla. after the group held their 2011 Tax Day Tea Party on April 16. The event included guest speaker (and then-maybe-possibly presidential candidate) Donald Trump, and attracted well over 2,000 people, including plenty of media.

As the Sentinel Sun reported late last week, the city Boca Raton charged the Tea Party group for setting up event barricades near the highway as well as support officers at the rally.

Having Trump and a supposedly fiscally-responsible Tea Party group skip out on a bill is, of course, fodder for more liberal news publications. In a lengthy letter today, however, the SFTP leader, Everett Wilkinson says the barricades were set by the highway for nearly a week, and provided support for a MoveOn.org protest two days later.

"Barriers were set up on April 15th and removed April 19th despite the fact the Tax Day Tea Party was on April 16th," said Wilkinson. "The city of Boca Raton set up the barriers for both the Tax Day Tea Party Event and a unrelated event on April 18th by Moveon.org. Why should SFTP pay for barriers for Moveon.org?"
