Scientists warn of deadly shellfish in part of Alaska Posted: 10 Jun 2011 12:47 PM PDT By Yereth Rosen, Yahoo News ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) – Public health officials warned Alaskans to avoid eating shellfish they harvest from the southeastern tip of the state after high concentrations of a poison than can kill humans was found. State officials said scientists monitoring algae blooms near Ketchikan discovered some of the world’s highest-ever recorded levels of toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning — a potentially fatal ailment that can paralyze vital organs. The most poisonous shellfish discovered were baby mussels at a dock in Ketchikan with toxin levels of more than 30,000 micrograms per hundred grams of shellfish meat. This is well over the 80-microgram level considered toxic, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services has warned. Those levels are so high that a single mussel could kill several people, scientists at the University of Alaska Southeast said in a statement on Thursday. In other types of shellfish, members of the multi-agency Alaska Harmful Algal Bloom monitoring program found toxin levels ranging from 1,100 to 5,000 micrograms per gram of shellfish meat, the department said. State officials have posted warnings on the region’s beaches, docks, stores and other public places, and police have issued warnings on marine radios, the department said. Dope-Smoking, Menstruating Monkey Study Got $3.6 Million in Tax Dollars Posted: 10 Jun 2011 12:43 PM PDT By Christopher Neefus, CNSNEWS.COM (CNSNews.com) – The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a division of the federal government's National Institutes of Health (NIH), has spent $3,634,807 over the past decade funding research that involves getting monkeys to smoke and drink drugs such as PCP, methamphetamine (METH), heroin, and cocaine and then studying their behavior, including during different phases of the female monkeys' menstrual cycles. The study also uses "interventions" as "treatment models" for monkeys who have been taught to use drugs. NIDA wins CNSNews.com’s “What Were They Smoking Award”—symbolized by The Golden Hookah (see video)—for sponsoring an outrageous government spending program that sends taxpayer dollars up in smoke. Precursor research on drug-using monkeys, also funded by NIDA, discovered that after smoking cocaine monkeys exhibited "dilated pupils and slightly agitated, hyperactive behavior"—which helped researchers conclude that the "physiological effects" of cocaine on monkeys "were similar to those reported in studies of human subjects." In yet another federally funded study of drug-taking monkeys, the monkeys were sometimes given "trail mix" after "their daily experimental sessions." Back in 2001, the NIH gave $328,364 to a project called "A Primate Model of Drug Abuse: Intervention Strategies." The principal investigator for the project was Dr. Marilyn E. Carroll, a professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Minnesota. To read more, visit: http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/feds-spent-36-million-research-studies-d |
Battle Brewing Over Control Of SF Gay Pride Flag Posted: 10 Jun 2011 12:39 PM PDT From: Sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The iconic rainbow flag that flies over the Castro in San Francisco was the topic of Thursday's Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District meeting as the board decides whether to ask the Department of Public Works to convene a meeting on the flag. Concern over who controls the flag came to a head in March when community members requested that the flag operators, the Merchants of Upper Market and Castro, lower the flag to mark the death of gay icon and actress Elizabeth Taylor, Castro Benefit District executive director Andrea Aiello said. MUMC denied the request, the group's president Steve Adams said. The group receives up to 10 requests each month to lower the flag for various reasons, and the board has to limit the number of lowerings. "For us, the flag is a source of pride. People want it up as much as possible," Adams said. For the past 12 years, the Merchants of Upper Market and Castro have had control of the flag, located at the corner of Market and Castro streets, Adams said. The flagpole is on city land, but the merchants' association funds the insurance and upkeep of the rainbow flag in a "public-private partnership," which Adams considers of benefit to the city's Department of Public Works. Presidential candidates to speak at pro-gold standard events Posted: 10 Jun 2011 12:36 PM PDT By Alex Pappas, Dailycaller.com Several 2012 Republican presidential candidates are slated to participate in an Iowa bus tour that seeks to make returning the country's monetary system to the gold standard a key election issue. The Iowa Tea Party and the group American Principles in Action announced that they are launching their 18-day bus tour starting June 13. Republicans Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Gary Johnson, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum are scheduled to speak during at least one stop on the tour, according to Andy Blom, executive director of American Principles in Action. All are either running or contemplating a run for president in 2012. The gold standard is the monetary system, popular with libertarians and Tea Party supporters, where every dollar is backed up by gold. Blom said the group plans to push candidates on the topic. "We're facing dramatic inflation and we have a government with out of control spending," Blom said. "If we go back to making our money actually worth something, it stabilizes prices, it takes away the government's credit card, they can't just decide to go print tons of money and devalue the dollar." Blom said they also hope to get the grassroots, populist support behind the issue. Posted: 10 Jun 2011 12:33 PM PDT By: Christopher A. Guzman, caivn.org As the internet shapes up to play a bigger role in 2012, Republican candidates Gov. Gary Johnson and Rep. Ron Paul are using the medium to challenge the mainstream media and their own GOP presidential colleagues. CNN recently decided to exclude Johnson from appearing in its upcoming Republican debate on June 13. With the net at his disposal, however, the former New Mexico governor took to his Youtube channel to directly communicate his thoughts on CNN’s decision to determine the field of candidates. “Tell CNN to let Gary Johnson debate on June 13…Give Liberty a Voice,” the clip opens. Throughout the rest of the brief clip, Johnson touts his record as former governor of New Mexico and urges his supporters to contact CNN. Whether or not Johnson will be able to rally the troops to change CNN’s mind is uncertain at this point. What is certain is, if there is a significant following for Johnson, then the internet will allow him to use communication channels like Youtube to test the waters and bypass CNN’s tight control. Congressman Paul, making his third run for the presidency, is famously trademarked by his (primarily) online money bomb fundraising strategy. Thus far, it’s been no stranger to this campaign’s beginning stages. Just ahead of the first presidential debate back in May, his grassroots-coordinated, mass fundraising effort lured more than $1 million from small donors (as Yahoo News reported). The Center for Responsive Politics reported that Paul has had a history of money bomb success among the retiree, military, and health professional sectors. Donors in the technology field working at such large companies like Google also rounded out the congressman’s top donors. Paul’s past donations also have quite a bit of a California flavor to them as well, with the Golden State offering a higher percentage of donations than his home state of Texas. Unlike other 2012 hopefuls, Gary Johnson still popular at home Posted: 10 Jun 2011 12:30 PM PDT By Luke Johnson, Newmexicoindependent.com Most New Mexicans still have a favorable view of former Gov. Gary Johnson, whereas other 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls are all unpopular, according to Public Policy Polling. Johnson has a 44-32 favorability spread, compared with all of the other candidates who have negative favorability ratings in their home state. Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, who has not announced a run for president, has a 50 percent unfavorable rating to 42 percent favorable. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are also unpopular, with only 40 percent holding a favorable view of them in their respective home states. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin are particularly unpopular in their home states, with just 33 percent holding a favorable view of them. (Rep. Ron Paul, who is a libertarian like Johnson, and former Utah Gov. John Huntsman were not included in the poll.) While Johnson is well-liked in New Mexico, more than eight in 10 registered Republicans nationwide do not recognize his name, according to Gallup. He is not measured in many nationwide polls, and CNN did not invite him to its June 13 debate. AMC will distribute Palin film Posted: 10 Jun 2011 12:26 PM PDT By MOLLY BALL, Politico.com The Undefeated," a flattering new documentary about Sarah Palin, has inked a distribution deal with North America's second-largest movie theater chain for a July 15 release. AMC Theatres will show "The Undefeated" in markets including Dallas, Denver, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Fla., Atlanta, Orange County, Calif., Phoenix, Houston, Indianapolis and Kansas City, Mo., according to the news release from the production company, Victory Film Group. To drum up buzz, the filmmakers also plan to take "The Undefeated" to the early-voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina for one-night showings. But the writer-director, Steve Bannon, says the film's goal is to make money, not get Palin elected to anything. He believes the film's up-from-obscurity narrative will have wide appeal to nonpolitical people. Victory Film Group's co-founder, Glenn Bracken Evans, echoed that sentiment in the news release. "The documentary is made to be seen on a big screen," he said. "With its story of a small-town girl who, against all odds, rises to the pinnacles of American government, the film plays with all the drama of a "Rocky" picture, only with a woman as the central figure and with politics instead of boxing." The film, which Palin has seen but has no involvement with, casts the former Alaska governor and vice-presidential nominee as the hero and epitome of the tea party movement — an ordinary citizen stirred to action to restore common sense to government.
