Herman Cain To CBS News: Homosexuality Is ‘A Sin’ And ‘A Choice’ Posted: 09 Jun 2011 12:28 PM PDT by Mark Joyella, Mediaite In an interview Wednesday with CBS News, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain described homosexuality as "a sin" and "a choice." Appearing on the CBS News web program Washington Unplugged, Cain told CBSNews.com senior political reporter Brian Montopoli "I believe homosexuality is a sin because I'm a Bible-believing Christian, I believe it's a sin," he said. "But I know that some people make that choice. That's their choice." Montopoli followed up, asking Cain if he thought gays and lesbians were making "a choice" to be homosexual: Cain was asked: "So you believe it's a choice?" U.S. Is Intensifying a Secret Campaign of Yemen Airstrikes Posted: 09 Jun 2011 11:21 AM PDT By: Mark Mazzetti, NYTimes.com WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has intensified the American covert war in Yemen, exploiting a growing power vacuum in the country to strike at militant suspects with armed drones and fighter jets, according to American officials. The acceleration of the American campaign in recent weeks comes amid a violent conflict in Yemen that has left the government in Sana, a United States ally, struggling to cling to power. Yemeni troops that had been battling militants linked to Al Qaeda in the south have been pulled back to the capital, and American officials see the strikes as one of the few options to keep the militants from consolidating power. On Friday, American jets killed Abu Ali al-Harithi, a midlevel Qaeda operative, and several other militant suspects in a strike in southern Yemen. According to witnesses, four civilians were also killed in the airstrike. Weeks earlier, drone aircraft fired missiles aimed at Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical American-born cleric who the United States government has tried to kill for more than a year. Mr. Awlaki survived. The recent operations come after a nearly year-long pause in American airstrikes, which were halted amid concerns that poor intelligence had led to bungled missions and civilian deaths that were undercutting the goals of the secret campaign. Officials in Washington said that the American and Saudi spy services had been receiving more information — from electronic eavesdropping and informants — about the possible locations of militants. But, they added, the outbreak of the wider conflict in Yemen created a new risk: that one faction might feed information to the Americans that could trigger air strikes against a rival group. A senior Pentagon official, speaking only on condition of anonymity, said on Wednesday that using force against militants in Yemen was further complicated by the fact that Qaeda operatives have mingled with other rebels and antigovernment militants, making it harder for the United States to attack without the appearance of picking sides. China Genetically Modifying Cows To Produce Human Breast Milk Posted: 09 Jun 2011 11:17 AM PDT From: myfoxny.com BEIJING – Chinese scientists have genetically modified dairy cows to produce human breast milk, and hope to be selling it in supermarkets within three years. The milk produced by the transgenic cows is identical to the human variety, with the same immune-boosting and antibacterial qualities as breast milk, scientists at China’s Agricultural University in Beijing said. The transgenic herd of 300 was bred by inserting human genes into cloned cow embryos which were then implanted into surrogate cows. The technology used was similar to that used to produce Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned by scientists, in Scotland. The milk is still undergoing safety tests, but with government permission it will be sold to consumers as a more nutritious dairy drink than cow’s milk. Workers at the university’s dairy farm have already tasted the milk — and said it is sweeter and stronger than the bovine variety, according to Sky News . “It’s good,” said worker Jiang Yao. “It’s better for you because it’s genetically modified.” To read more, visit: http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/china-genetically-modifying-cows-to-produce-human-breast-milk-20110608-ncx |
STUDY: Sitting Can Be As Deadly As Smoking Posted: 09 Jun 2011 11:15 AM PDT From: Sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com Smoking cigarettes is the cause of so much preventable, deadly disease. But now new research shows sitting for long stretches of time may be just as dangerous. "Smoking certainly is a major cardiovascular risk factor and sitting can be equivalent in many cases," explained Dr. David Coven. Dr. Coven is a cardiologist. He says several new studies show prolonged sitting is now being linked to increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and even early death. "The fact of being sedentary causes factors to happen in the body that are very detrimental," said Dr. Coven. Dr. Coven says when you sit for long periods of time; your body goes into storage mode, When that happens, it stops working as effectively as it should. What's worse, the more hours a day you sit, the greater your likelihood of developing one or more of these diseases, just as with smoking. Linda Caufield has a desk job. She sits nearly seven hours a day. "I'm on the computer, I'm on the phone, I'm doing paperwork so all that stuff has to be done at my desk," she said. Posted: 09 Jun 2011 11:11 AM PDT By: Peter Guest, CNBC.com Dominique Strauss-Kahn, naturally, isn’t attending this year, and his likely successor Christine Lagarde is in China, but the Bilderberg Conference which kicks off in the Swiss resort of St. Moritz on Thursday retains its conspiratorial chic and pulling power. The attendee list of Bilderberg is still pretty much the only thing that is not a closely guarded secret, as 120 of the world’s richest and most powerful people meet behind closed doors, this time at the Suvretta House hotel in Switzerland, a venue which not only boasts a “fairytale castle” design, but also its own “Teddy World.” U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne are known to have attended in the past, although it seems unlikely that either will attend this week. A spokesperson at the U.K. Treasury press office said it “didn’t know” whether or not Osborne would go this year, but promised to call CNBC.com back. They did not. Given the secretive spirit of Bilderberg, that could well be taken as a confirmation. The first Bilderberg meeting in 1954 was an attempt to stamp out post-war anti-Americanism in Europe, bringing together senior U.S. and European figures to meet and discuss the international challenges of the day. Since then, the rich and powerful have continued to meet. The 2010 event, in Sitges, Spain, included on its agenda “The Growing Influence of Cyber Technology,” “Security in a Proliferated World,” “Promises of Medical Science,” and “Can We Feed the World.” according to its official website.
