Project backed by prominent Dem donor could interfere with military GPS Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:54 AM PDT By Shaun Waterman-The Washington Times The boss of an upstart Virginia company said Wednesday that his firm is on the cusp of solving technical problems that have dogged its effort to build a nationwide high-speed wireless network that critics worry will cripple military and commercial navigation systems. "Watch this space," Sanjiv Ahuja, CEO of Reston-based LightSquared, told editors and reporters at The Washington Times. "In the next few days, we will come out and say, 'It's possible, and here's the engineering solution for it.' " Mr. Ahuja and his company for months have been at the center of a firestorm of controversy over the $15 billion network, which he said will slash consumers' cellphone bills by more than a third. The row was set to continue this week when Julius Genachowski, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, testifies to a House Armed Services subcommittee. NFL wants pat-downs from ankles up at all stadiums Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:50 AM PDT
The NFL wants all fans patted down from the ankles up this season to improve fan safety. Under the new “enhanced” pat-down procedures, the NFL wants all 32 clubs to search fans from the ankles to the knees as well as the waist up. Previously, security guards only patted down fans from the waist up while looking for booze, weapons or other banned items. The stricter physical screening policy impacts the 16.6 million fans expected to attend live regular season NFL games this season. The more thorough searches will spell longer lines for ticket-holding fans seeking entry to games. It’s sure to raise the ire of some fans who consider it an invasion of privacy. The NFL recommended the new guidelines before Week 1 of the season, says spokesman Brian McCarthy. The league hopes fans will be “patient” — and arrive earlier to games to avoid long, punishing lines. “The enhanced security procedures recommended by our office before the start of the season will further increase the safety of fans but will require some additional time,” McCarthy told USA TODAY in a statement Thursday. “We encourage fans to come early, enjoy their tailgating tradition, and be patient as they enter the stadium.” To read more, visit: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2011/09/nfl-orders-ankles-up-frisks-for-16-million-fans-enterting-stadiums-security-buffalo-bills/1?loc=interstitialskip |

WASHINGTON — Encouraged by Michelle Obama's campaign to reduce childhood obesity, the company that owns the Olive Garden, Red Lobster and four other popular restaurant chains is pledging to cut the calories and sodium in its meals and overhaul its kids' fare. Darden Restaurants Inc. was unveiling the changes Thursday, with the first lady on hand to lend support. The company will pledge to reduce the calories and sodium in all its meals by 10 percent over five years, and by 20 percent over 10 years. For children, French fries and sugar-sweetened beverages will become the exception and not the rule. All kids' meals will automatically come with a side of fruit or vegetables and eight ounces of 1 percent milk unless an adult requests a substitute, Drew Madsen, president and chief operating officer of Orlando, Fla.-based Darden, told The Associated Press. “We think it's the most comprehensive health and wellness commitment in the industry,” he said. Darden's restaurants serve more than 400 million meals annually at more than 1,900 locations nationwide. Its four other restaurant chains are LongHorn Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Bahama Breeze and Seasons 52. The Capital Grille and Seasons 52 do not have children's menus. Federal Reserve boosts flow of dollars to European Central Bank Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:40 AM PDT By Neil Irwin and Michael Birnbaum, The Washington Post Worried that a mounting debt crisis in Europe could trip up the global economy, the Federal Reserve opened its vault Thursday to the central banks of other countries in an effort to head off a crippling shortage of dollars. The main recipient of the Fed's money is the European Central Bank, which will in turn extend dollar loans to banks in the nations that use the euro currency. Those banks do significant business in dollars, for instance making loans to customers operating around the world, and have been finding it harder to raise dollars from anxious investors. The initiative, which entails temporarily swapping dollars for foreign currencies, also involves the central banks of Britain, Switzerland and Japan, underlining the extent of international concern about Europe's deteriorating financial system. By tapping the Fed for dollars, the other central banks are taking advantage of long-standing arrangements, first put in place four years ago at the outset of the global financial crisis to prevent bank lending from freezing up. Global stock markets surged on the news of this coordinated response by some of the world's leading central banks. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index in the United States rose 1.7 percent Thursday, and the German stock market closed up 3.2 percent. Asian markets rose in early Friday trading, with Japan's Nikkei 225 index up 1.7 percent at midday. The value of the euro currency rose on greater optimism that the European debt crisis can be resolved. Thousands Come Clean as IRS Gets $2.7 Billion Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:36 AM PDT By Richard Rubin, Bloomberg.com The Internal Revenue Service has taken in a total of $2.7 billion from holders of offshore bank accounts, the agency said as it announced that 12,000 taxpayers responded to the second round of a partial amnesty program. IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman said yesterday that the agency's emphasis on international tax enforcement prompted more people than anticipated to accept penalties and reveal their accounts. "The results we're seeing today were unthinkable just a few short years ago," he said on a conference call with reporters. "The world has clearly changed." "You'd have to be living in a hole not to know that the U.S. government is really focused on offshore tax evasion, getting better at it," Shulman said. GOP divided over tea party movement Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:33 AM PDT By: CNN Political Unit Washington (CNN) – The Republican Party is split right down the middle between tea party movement supporters and those who do not support the two-and-a-half-year-old movement, according to a new national survey. And a CNN/ORC International Poll released Thursday also highlights the differences in demographics, ideology, and temperament between the two camps. According to the survey, on some issues, the two wings of the GOP are in accord, but tea party activists and supporters do not speak for the entire Republican Party on issues such as the deficit, global warming, evolution, abortion, gay marriage, the Federal Reserve, the Department of Education, or Social Security. “Demographically, the tea party movement seems to hearken back to the ‘angry white men’ who were credited with the GOP’s upset victory in the 1994 midterm elections,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Ideologically, it effectively boils down to the century-old contest between the conservative and moderate wings of the party.” To read more, visit: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/15/new-cnn-poll-gop-divided-over-tea-party-movement/ |
Barry Manilow on Ron Paul: ‘I agree with just about everything he says’ Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:31 AM PDT By Nicholas Ballasy – The Daily Caller Grammy award-winning musician Barry Manilow told The Daily Caller that he agrees with "just about everything" 2012 Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul says, calling him a "solid" contender for the highest office in the land. "I like him. I like what he says, I do. I like what he says. I think he's solid," said Manilow, who confirmed to TheDC in an interview at the Capitol on Thursday that he contributed to Paul's last campaign for president. "I agree with just about everything he says. What can I tell you?" Manilow added. Manilow was on Capitol Hill speaking at a briefing on atrial fibrillation or AFib, a heart disease that affects over 2.5 million Americans. Manilow, who has fought the disease for over 15 years, encouraged lawmakers to support H.R. 295, a bill that would advance AFib research and education in part by "encouraging education programs that promote collaboration among the Federal health agencies and that increase public and clinician awareness of atrial fibrillation, including risk assessment, screening, treatment, and appropriate clinical management."
