Obama Calls for Extension of Gas Tax to Fund Highway Construction, Repair

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 05:02 AM PDT

By FOXNews.com

President Obama called on Congress Wednesday to pass a transportation funding bill that includes an extension of the federal gas tax, claiming the move would protect about 1 million jobs.

At issue is the renewal of a transportation spending bill that expires Sept. 30. The president, speaking in the Rose Garden, said a failure to pass the bill by that date would result in the government losing needed money and construction workers losing needed jobs.

“That’s just not acceptable. It’s inexcusable,” he said.

Though the president describes the proposal as a transportation bill, its key component is the federal gas tax, which has been 18.4 cents per gallon for nearly two decades. The money is used to fund road construction and repair, as well as other projects — the tax costs Americans an average of $100 a year.

The call for renewal comes as gas prices remain high — the national average for a gallon of regular is about $3.62, a dollar more than a year ago. Some conservatives want to allow states, not the federal government, to raise and spend the gas tax money.

But Obama said America’s infrastructure — everything from bridges to public transit — needs the funding now. He said a 10-day delay would cost $1 billion in lost funding. He said 1 million people could lose their jobs over the course of next year without the renewal. Obama called on Congress to pass the “clean” extension “as soon as they come back” from break next week.

Fla. Health Officials Report Swine Flu Death

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT

By WFTV

TAVARES, Fla. — Florida health officials say an 80-year-old woman has died after contracting the swine flu.

Lake County Health Department spokeswoman Sheri Hutchinson confirmed the death Tuesday. She says the woman had recently traveled to California so it is difficult to determine whether she picked up the virus during her trip or in Florida.

Hutchinson says this is Lake County’s first Swine Flu death this year. She says officials were “shocked” because flu cases — including the swine flu — are typically diagnosed in the fall and winter.

Health officials are encouraging residents to get vaccinated. They said the best protection is the flu vaccine.

Cloud control: Giant lasers fired into the sky could be used to create rainfall

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 04:59 AM PDT

By STEPHEN HULL, Daily Mail UK

Britons are notoriously obsessed with the weather, especially rainclouds.

Now, according to scientists, it seems they will soon be able to create their own washout conditions.

Using a powerful laser, researchers have created water droplets in the air.

The technique, called laser-assisted water condensation, could one day unlock the secrets of weather cycles and enable humans to decide where and when it rains.

While 'cloud seeding' has existed for some time it is not considered a safe way of creating rainclouds because it involves filling the atmosphere with small particles such as dry ice and silver iodide.

This means that while raindrops can form, chemicals are often spread far and wide and potentially damage the environment.

Ron Paul calls Rick Perry “a formidable candidate”

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 04:57 AM PDT

By Richard Dunham, The Houston Chronicle

Over the last few weeks, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul described his White House rival — and fellow Texan — Rick Perry as a "cookie-cutter candidate" and a "status quo" politician. Today, he displayed a different tone.

"I think he's a formidable candidate," the Lake Jackson congressman told NPR's Neal Conan and Ken Rudin in an interview airing this evening.

Despite his respect for the Texas governor's political prowess, Paul continued to reject Perry's stand on issues such as U.S. military interventionism around the world.

"There are quite a few other things in his past, politically and philosophically, that I wouldn't agree with. His comments on foreign policy haven't been exactly what I would like."

While both men are battling to win the votes of Tea Party Republicans, Paul says that his libertarian domestic policies and non-interventionist foreign policy present a stark contrast with Perry.

ranging from foreign policy to , the Republican presidential candidate and Republican Representative from Texas talks about his run for the Oval office, his feelings on opponent Rick Perry and why he thinks President Obama may have planned his jobs announcement to coincide with a GOP primary debate.

Rep. West threatens in letter to leave Congressional Black Caucus over tea party bashing

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 04:51 AM PDT

By Caroline May, The Daily Caller

In response to recent comments made by Indiana Democratic Rep. Andre Carson and California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters that denigrate the tea party movement, Florida Republican Rep. Allen West — a member of both the Congressional Black Caucus and the Tea Party Caucus — sent a letter to CBC Chairman Emanuel Cleaver Wednesday requesting that the body condemn such remarks.

"As Chairman of the CBC, I believe it is incumbent on you to both condemn these types of hate-filled comments, and to disassociate the Congressional Black Caucus from these types of remarks. Otherwise, I will have to seriously reconsider my membership within the organization," West wrote. (OPINION: Andre Carson: Serial racebaiter)

The freshman congressman declared, "It is unconscionable when a fellow CBC Member, Congressman Andre Carson, comes to South Florida and claims that some in the Tea Party would love to see black Americans 'hanging on a tree.' It is appalling to hear another CBC colleague, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, say 'The Tea Party can go straight to hell.'"

West added that Carson's comments, which caricature the tea party movement as a group of racists, are "baseless" and "desperate." West reiterated that the movement is focused on fiscal responsibility and American exceptionalism and wrote that the the CBC should be working to end the "balkanisation" of America.
