It’s all or nothing for the congressman from Texas:

After serving almost 24 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Ron Paul told The Facts this morning he will not be seeking another term for the District 14 seat.

Paul, 75, will instead focus on his quest for the presidency in 2012.

"I felt it was better that I concentrate on one election," Paul said. "It's about that time when I should change tactics."

Michelle Obama’s 1,556-Calorie Lunch Raises Eyebrows

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 02:06 PM PDT

By NewsCore, MyFOXNY

WASHINGTON – First Lady Michelle Obama may have temporarily forgotten the lessons of her own anti-obesity campaign when she indulged in a sinfully caloric lunch Monday at a popular new hamburger restaurant.

A Washington Post reporter said the first lady ordered a cheeseburger, french fries, chocolate shake and Diet Coke at Shake Shack — a trendy hamburger spot that recently opened an outpost in Washington’s Dupont Circle.

Based on nutritional information on the restaurant’s website, the meal added up to a scale-tipping 1,556 calories.

Obama has made the fight against childhood-obesity a central focus of her White House tenure and launched the “Let’s Move” campaign to promote exercise and ensure children have access to healthy food.

OBAMA THREATENS TO HOLD UP SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 02:00 PM PDT

By Corbett B. Daly, CBS News

President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.

“I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven’t resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it,” Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News.

The Obama administration and many economists have warned of economic catastrophe if the United States does not raise the amount it is legally allowed to borrow by August 2.

Lawmakers from both parties want to use the threat of that deadline to work out a broader package on long-term deficit reduction, with Republicans looking to cut trillions of dollars in federal spending, while Democrats are pushing for a more “balanced approach,” which would include both spending cuts and increased revenue through taxes.

Gingrich says tea party key to 2012 GOP majority

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 01:53 PM PDT

By THOMAS BEAUMONT, The Chicago Tribune

PELLA, Iowa— GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said in Iowa Monday that fellow Republicans will have failed next year if they take back the White House without winning over tea party activists around the country.

The former U.S. House speaker resumed his struggling campaign in Iowa with a light schedule of appearances. However, Gingrich said he had no plans of leaving the race, despite having lost most of his national and Iowa campaign staff last month over disagreements about strategy.

“I see our campaign as being at the convention in August of next year,” Gingrich told reporters after speaking to an audience of about 75 at Pella Christian High School.

Gingrich said whoever the Republican presidential nominee is will not be able to turn back accomplishments of the Democratic Obama administration without winning big congressional majorities.

And that would require a lasting alliance between the GOP and tea party supporters, he said.

OBAMA EXECUTIVE ORDERS IMPOSE NEW GUN RULES

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 01:50 PM PDT

By Buck Sexton, The Blaze

A few days ago, the Blaze reported on the low-key plans of the Obama administration to increase the penalties for certain gun law violations, and add steps to the background checks for legal gun ownership.

Today the administration's plans are beginning to come into effect. Through an Executive Order, the Obama administration is implementing new restrictions on the sale of certain weapons in border states, and increasing the penalties for violating certain firearms laws.

Fox News is reporting on the purpose of the gun control executive orders:

"In an effort to stem the illicit flow of weapons into Mexico, the Justice Department announced Monday that all gun shops in four Southwest border states will be required to alert the federal government to frequent buyers of high-powered rifles.

Under the new policy, federal firearms licensees in Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico must report purchases of two or more of some types of rifles by the same person in a five-day span. The requirement applies to purchases of semi-automatic rifles that have detachable magazines and a caliber of greater than .22.

Congressman Allen West reports huge fundraising quarter, takes in $1.5 million

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 01:46 PM PDT

By Anthony Man, Sun Sentinel

U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Plantation, said Monday he's raised a mountain of money in the last quarter.

For the three months ended June 30, West said he raised $1.5 million.

est, who's popular nationally among tea party activists and often appears on FOX News, raised far more money than he took in during the same quarter two years ago. And he took in far more than the incumbent he went on to defeat.

In the second quarter of 2008, West raised $218,000. Then-U.S. Rep. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton, raised $371,000, reports filed with the Federal Election Commission show.

Current campaign disclosure reports are due later this week; Monday's information came from the West campaign.

One of the most notable features of his fundraising is the money came from 23,500, according to the campaign – including 12,000 new contributors. That shows West has a strong network of contributors who can be tapped again to help fund what is expected to be an expensive campaign because it requires advertising in the pricey Miami-Fort Lauderdale television market.

The average contribution is $66.
