Debt Talks Complicated by What’s a Tax Hike Posted: 06 Jul 2011 03:18 PM PDT By Richard Rubin and Steven Sloan, Bloomberg.com Congressional Republicans are refusing to include tax increases in a bill to raise the U.S. debt limit, even as they fight with each other and with Democrats about how to define just what a tax increase is. Lawmakers and tax analysts associated with both parties are challenging the approach that says eliminating a tax break is always a tax increase. Instead, they say tax benefits for ethanol, solar energy, mortgage interest and other items are really spending in disguise. If that view is accepted, such tax breaks could be curtailed for deficit reduction and be seen as equivalent to federal spending cuts. In this semantic debate, members of Congress talk past each other without a common fiscal language. Defining a tax increase has become a central policy question as Congress and the Obama administration seek an agreement that can satisfy Republicans who oppose tax increases and Democrats who insist on them. He's only half-joking. For years, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist's definition of a tax increase has dominated Republican circles in Washington, and it remains the primary approach, backed with a pledge that Norquist enforces. Bachmann: Obama Thinks “Tea Party Made Up Of Toothless Hillbillies” Posted: 06 Jul 2011 03:12 PM PDT Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), GOP presidential candidate, warned President Obama to “be afraid of the tea party.” “They want you to think that the tea party is made up of toothless hillbillies coming down out of the hills wearing red, white and blue. But the fact is, they should be afraid of the tea party,” Bachmann said at a campaign rally in Iowa. City officials turn red light cameras back on after voters reject them Posted: 06 Jul 2011 03:03 PM PDT From Chron.com The city of Houston will turn its red-light cameras back on today, Mayor Annise Parker announced after this morning's City Council meeting. According to a statement from the mayor's office, tickets will be issued after a "short period of equipment testing." Houston voters approved a referendum to turn off the cameras in November, but a federal judge ruled last month that it had been improperly placed on the ballot, rendering the results invalid. As a result, the city faced a choice to turn the cameras back on or canceling its contract with American Traffic Solutions, which could cost the city $16 million. UN environmental initiative is the Tea Party’s new nightmare Posted: 06 Jul 2011 09:39 AM PDT By Caroline May, The Daily Caller Tea Party activists have started to sound the alarms over a United Nations initiative most Americans have never heard of, but one that many in the movement see as one of the greatest threats to America's sovereignty. "Americans are so focused on Congress and Obama at the federal level of government right now that most are overlooking the socialism creeping in at the local level through Agenda 21," the Tea Party publication the Tea Party Tribune warned readers on July 2. Agenda 21 is a UN initiative that 178 governments at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) adopted in 1992 under the auspices of saving the environment. It bills itself as a coordinated plan of action to help nations and local government ensure "sustainability." "Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally and locally by organizations of the United Nations System, Governments, and Major Groups in every area in which human impacts on the environment," the U.N. website explains. FDA Says: Drinking This Natural Food is a Crime Posted: 06 Jul 2011 09:36 AM PDT On May 16th, Representative Ron Paul asked, “If we are not even free anymore to decide something as basic as what we wish to eat or drink, how much freedom do we really have left?” Paul was talking about the FDA ban on the interstate sale of raw milk for human consumption — milk that has not been pasteurized. The ban began in 1987, but the FDA didn’t really begin enforcing it seriously until 2006 — when the government began sting operations and armed raids of dairy farmers and their willing customers. The New American reports: “Even if the FDA were correct in its assertions about the dangers of raw milk, its prohibition on interstate raw milk sales would still be, as Paul termed it, ‘an unconstitutional misapplication of the commerce clause for legislative ends’ … Saying he is ‘outraged’ by the FDA’s raids on peaceful dairy farmers and their customers, Paul has introduced legislation … ‘to allow the shipment and distribution of unpasteurized milk and milk products for human consumption across state lines,’ in effect reversing the FDA’s unconstitutional ban on such sales.” The “Food Safety Modernization Act” that was enacted earlier this year gives the FDA almost unlimited authority to decide if food is harmful, even without credible evidence. But farmers who have been persecuted by the FDA for selling raw milk, like Amish Farmer Dan Allgyer, are not backing down. Allgyer’s case is going to court.
