GOP conservatives, Tea Party freshmen balk at budget Posted: 14 Apr 2011 05:28 PM PDT A close look at the final U.S. House vote on the 2011 budget deal shows dozens of GOP conservatives and Tea Party-backed freshmen opposed the measure, underscoring the challenge that lies ahead as President Obama tries to raise the nation’s debt ceiling. The measure passed only after 81 Democrats sided with 179 Republicans to vote “yes” on the agreement, which averted a government shutdown last week and cuts spending by $38 billion over the next six months. House Speaker John Boehner urged his GOP majority to back the legislation, even though it did not reach the party’s goal of cutting $100 billion in federal spending. “I have to vote ‘no’ because I was sent here to change the way this town does business,” said freshman Rep. Joe Walsh, R-Ill. “And this bill contains too much business as usual.” To read more, visit: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/onpolitics/post/2011/04/house-no-votes-budget-deal-/1 |
