Will Maine give Republican Paul his first win?

Posted: 11 Feb 2012 07:10 AM PST

By Ros Krasny | Reuters

He is the only one of the four contenders for the Republican presidential nomination not to have won a state primary or caucus.

But on Saturday, Ron Paul could get his best shot at a victory in Maine, the cold, far northeastern state that has given a warm reception to his libertarian views.

Local caucusing has been under way in Maine since January 29, and will continue in a few towns until March. Even so, the state Republican Party will announce the winner of its presidential straw poll on Saturday, and the Texas congressman’s strong on-the-ground organization could have a big impact.

Mitt Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, generally is viewed as the favorite here, and in the overall Republican race. After losing the last three state contests to Rick Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, Romney is thirsty for a morale-boosting win in Maine, where he won 52 percent of the vote during his unsuccessful run for president in 2008.

Shyness, grieving soon to be classified as mental illness

Posted: 11 Feb 2012 06:46 AM PST

From: FOXNews.com

Millions of healthy people – including shy or defiant children, grieving relatives and people with fetishes – may be wrongly labeled mentally ill by a new international diagnostic manual, specialists said on Thursday.

In a damning analysis of an upcoming revision of the influential Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), psychologists, psychiatrists and mental health experts said its new categories and “tick-box” diagnosis systems were at best “silly” and at worst “worrying and dangerous.”

Some diagnoses – for conditions like “oppositional defiant disorder” and “apathy syndrome” – risk devaluing the seriousness of mental illness and medicalising behaviors most people would consider normal or just mildly eccentric, the experts said.

At the other end of the spectrum, the new DSM, due out next year, could give medical diagnoses for serial rapists and sex abusers – under labels like “paraphilic coercive disorder” – and may allow offenders to escape prison by providing what could be seen as an excuse for their behavior, they added.

The DSM is published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and has descriptions, symptoms and other criteria for diagnosing mental disorders. It is used internationally and is seen as the diagnostic “bible” for mental health medicine.

More than 11,000 health professionals have already signed a petition (at dsm5-reform.com) calling for the development of the fifth edition of the manual to be halted and re-thought.

Noem still undecided on joining Tea Party Caucus

Posted: 11 Feb 2012 06:43 AM PST

By: Denise Ross, The Daily Republic

U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., said she has not yet decided whether to join the House's Tea Party Caucus.

Noem was confronted by constituents about the issue at a town hall meeting held over the weekend in Rapid City, according to media reports. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., founded the Tea Party Caucus in July 2010. The caucus' website lists 60 members from the House's 435 representatives.

Rapid City resident Stephanie Strong announced recently that she plans to challenge Noem in a Republican primary, in part because Noem voted in August for a debt-ceiling increase.

Noem defended that vote in a call with reporters Thursday.

"I really believe that vote put fundamental reforms in place," said Noem, who's in her first term. "It significantly cut spending and gave us a plan forward. Anybody who looks at the House budget we voted on this year knows we have a plan for paying off that debt. It shows the vision the Republicans have for getting the government back on track."

Noem also answered criticism she's received for being the freshman class liaison to the House Republican leadership team.

Iowa gun rights advocates press bills to expand weapon owners’ freedoms

Posted: 10 Feb 2012 02:50 PM PST

Written by JASON CLAYWORTH, Desmoinesregister.com

Take 10 paces back, Iowa: There's a theoretical legislative shootout brewing.

The issue centers on multiple efforts in place to enhance gun rights in the state.

One would amend the state constitution in a way that critics say would throw out virtually all gun regulations in Iowa. But advocates of the bill say it is necessary to protect the constitutional right to bear arms.

Another proposal would permit a shoot-to-kill response by anyone who believes he's being threatened with death or serious injury by another person. And others would prohibit cities, counties and even the Iowa State Fair from setting rules prohibiting people from carrying guns in public buildings, parks or virtually any other government-owned property.

Some say that a few of the proposals within the latest gun bills have gone so far that they threaten public safety and could even encourage vigilante behavior.

"It's just a pro-criminal bill," Polk County Attorney John Sarcone said of House File 573, a bill that would allow Iowans the right to use deadly force against someone perceived to be a threat. "You know what it does? It will lead to an escalation of violence, not a reduction in violence. I think this bill will kick women and children back into the shadows."

California Taxpayers Fund Sleep Treatment For Death Row Inmates

Posted: 10 Feb 2012 02:45 PM PST

From: CBS San Francisco

SAN QUENTIN (CBS 5) — One out of every four Californians has no medical insurance. But $2 billion in taxpayer money is being spent each year to provide medical care to California's prisoners.

Take the case of San Quentin prison. The state built a brand new $136 million hospital at the prison for some of the state's worst offenders. But why were some inmates, including those on death row, being sent to outside hospitals for sleep studies?

Prison healthcare CEO Jackie Clark recently took CBS 5 on a tour of the state of the art facility.

"We have exam rooms, we have our primary care clinics, we also have lab service, physical therapy service," Clark said.

None of this came easy. Health care at San Quentin used to be so bad that inmates filed a class-action lawsuit. In 2005, a three judge panel found the entire California prison healthcare system "broken beyond repair" and ordered a federal receiver to take over and fix it.

Sam Johnson is serving life for first degree murder. He told CBS 5 things are much better now.

S&P suffers year’s biggest loss as Greek deal falters

Posted: 10 Feb 2012 02:40 PM PST

By Ryan Vlastelica, Reuters.com

The S&P 500 posted its biggest daily percentage decline thus far in 2012 on Friday after an about-face on Greece’s long-awaited debt deal ended a five-week streak of gains for equities.

All but one of the 30 Dow components ended lower while all 10 S&P sectors fell, with cyclical sectors such as energy, financials and materials the biggest losers.

The CBOE Volatility index .VIX, often referred to as Wall Street’s “fear index,” jumped 11.6 percent, its biggest percentage rise in three months.

Investors have anxiously awaited a bailout package for Greece so the country might avoid a messy default.

An agreement finally came this week but almost immediately ran into problems when European leaders called for additional austerity measures and some Greek lawmakers said they would not support the deal.

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said the nation needs to reach a decision within days on accepting the terms of a bailout.

Fox Business News Axes Freedom Watch

Posted: 10 Feb 2012 02:37 PM PST

By: Steve Watson, Infowars.com

The Fox Business Channel has cancelled one of the only shows on the entire Fox News network that was in any way informative or watchable – Freedom Watch with Judge Andrew Napolitano.

In a press release distributed late Thursday, the channel announced that its entire prime-time programming lineup had been changed, with re-runs of already existing programs replacing Freedom Watch.

Napolitano's show had been airing for a year, in which time he had consistently covered major issues that other news programs would only gloss over, if they devoted any coverage to them at all.

Napolitano's coverage of the freedom stripping National Defense Authorization Act for one was second to none as far as mainstream news output was concerned. His legal and constitutional expertise on such matters is also unrivalled.

His focus on Austrian economics and Libertarian social policy provided a much welcome alternative to the endless left/right bickering constantly played out on programming from the likes of MSNBC, CNN, and FOX News itself.

Napolitano regularly defended the free market and lambasted the actions of the Federal Reserve, holding it accountable daily for the economic crisis that the US finds itself mired in. Congressman Ron Paul was a regular guest on the show, with a host of other informative analysts who were not merely about peddling the establishment party line or representing special interests.

LAPD Pioneers High-Tech Crime-Fighting ‘War Room’

Posted: 10 Feb 2012 02:34 PM PST

From: CBS Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The LAPD is fighting crime from a high-tech war room that gives it eyes all over the city. The surveillance hub is now a model for police forces around the world and KCAL9 got an exclusive tour inside from Chief Charlie Beck.

"We are targets on our own soil," says Beck. "We have to be ready."

What began as a grass roots idea following the 9/11 terrorist attacks is now a state-of-the-art real-time analysis critical response center. It's called RACR, and it's located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

"This is a system that cuts through the red tape, that gets information to the people that need it," says Chief Beck. He calls it "the brains of the department, twenty-four/seven."

Police in the activity center monitor live feeds of city and traffic cameras, counter-terrorism information, and real-time crime mapping, with cutting edge software.

"If we didn't have that we would be operating blind," says Capt. Sean Malinowski, the Commanding Officer at RACR. "Essentially we're always activated here."

Neotame the next aspartame? FDA doesn’t require labeling of latest chemical sweetener from Monsanto

Posted: 10 Feb 2012 02:32 PM PST

By: Jonathan Benson, NaturalNews.com

It could be lurking in the foods you eat every single day, including U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) certified organic foods, and you would never even know it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declared that one of Monsanto’s latest creations, a synthetic sweetener chemical known as neotame, does not have to be labeled in food products, including even in organic food products.

A modified version of aspartame with even more added toxicity, neotame received quiet and unassuming FDA approval back in 2002, even though no safety studies have ever been conducted on the chemical (http://www.neotame.com/pdf/neotame_fda_US.pdf). In fact, an investigation conducted by Feingold.org found only four studies relating to neotame in the MEDLINE database.

Two of these “studies” were not studies at all, and the other two were actually one duplicate study conducted by NutraSweet, the company that produces and sells neotame.

So just like with aspartame, the FDA has once again approved for use a dangerous sweetener chemical that metabolizes into formaldehyde when consumed. Except this time, the chemical contains added 3-dimethylbutyl, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has listed as one of the most hazardous known chemicals, and it does not have to be labeled on any of the products to which it is added.

“Neotame has similar structure to aspartame — except that, from it’s structure, appears to be even more toxic than aspartame,” writes HolisticMed.com on its page about neotame. “Like aspartame, some of the concerns include gradual neurotoxic and immunotoxic damage from the combination of the formaldehyde metabolite (which is toxic at extremely low doses) and the excitotoxic amino acid” (http://www.holisticmed.com/neotame/toxin.html).

The FDA, the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) all consider neotame to be safe for use, despite the fact that WHO actually published a paper seeking to establish acceptable daily intake levels for neotame. If neotame is so safe that it does not even have to be labeled, according to the FDA, then why do acceptable daily intake levels have to be established? And what is the point of establishing them in the first place?

3 ND Tea Party founders resign; 2 seeking office, third is managing US House campaign

From: TheRepublic.com

BISMARCK, N.D. — Three founding members of North Dakota’s Tea Party Caucus have resigned because they’re running for office or working on political campaigns this fall.

Former North Dakota Republican chairman Gary Emineth says he’ll be managing Republican Kevin Cramer’s primary campaign for the U.S. House this June.

Former North Dakota Republican chairman Gary Emineth says he’ll be managing Republican Kevin Cramer ‘s primary campaign for the U.S. House this June.

Fargo architect Paul Sorum is running for the Republican endorsement for governor against incumbent Gov. Jack Dalrymple. And Duane Sand is seeking the GOP endorsement to run for the U.S. House.

Tea Party organizer Perry Schumacher says Emineth, Sand and Sorum quit to end the impression that the Tea Party was behind their political efforts.

Schumacher says Friday the Tea Party is advocating a political philosophy of lower taxes and less government, without backing a political party.

The caucus was organized in April 2011.
