Dems Claim They Can Reverse The Tea Party Tide In 2012

After a wave election gave Republicans the majority in the House of Representatives in 2010, no one thought that Democrats, a year later, would be in a position to take it back.

But, that's exactly where Democrats claim to be. At a press briefing Wednesday, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman Steve Israel (D-NY) said that Republicans have had such a "catastrophic" year that he now believes Democrats can take back the House. The chairman was cautious not to sound too optimistic, but he had a long list of statistics in Democrats' favor; an advantage that comes almost entirely from Republicans' blunders over the past year.

The DCCC rolled out its first wave of Red to Blue Races, a list of 18 races where Democrats are confident they can oust a Republican incumbent. The DCCC also has three races they feel are in the bag and 18 more districts where the Democratic candidate is showing increasing strength. Overall, that's more than the 25 seats needed to reach a majority. As a sign of their understated optimism, Israel points out this is two months earlier than they normally roll out these races.

The Tea Party Helps Hold the Line on Internet Freedom

By George Zornick, The Nation

Since 2009, the far right has seen the evil hand of government intruding everywhere: healthcare reform was really a diabolical plot to institute government death panels that would kill off the elderly and disabled. Bailing out the auto industry was really a government takeover of a proud American private manufacturing sector. Getting rid of private student loan servicers? Yet another "soviet-style" takeover. And let's not even get started on cap-and-trade legislation to limit carbon emissions—that, of course, is an international plot designed to "control what you can and cannot do."

So when it comes to the Stop Online Piracy Act and its companion in the Senate, the Protect Intellectual Property Act—bills that, if you haven't been following, would actually give the government unprecedented power to censor the Internet in the name of preventing piracy—one might reasonably expect politicians who so often channel Tea Party phobias about federal control to oppose them, too.

Fortunately, that's exactly what's happening. Despite the highly effective protests and seeming turning tide of public opinion, PIPA is still looking at an uphill battle in the Senate. (The White House might end up vetoing the legislation anyhow, but it would no doubt be a setback for Internet freedom supporters if that bill actually cleared the Senate, since it would set a benchmark for the next inevitable battle over intellectual property online).

Utah tea party founder announces run for governor

PROVO — Utah tea party organizer David Kirkham launched his bid for governor Wednesday, promising the most open and transparent government the state has ever known.

“I see very, very, very little that should be hidden government. Doors should be open. Meetings should be open,” he said. “People need to know what is going on in government.”

Gov. Gary Herbert’s administration, he said, hasn’t been as transparent as it could be. “I think they could do better.”

The Provo Republican’s first try for elected office wasn’t unexpected. He began seriously considering it last fall and earlier this month said it was “virtually assured” that he would enter the race.

It wasn’t an easy decision, he said.

Kirkham runs Kirkham Motorsports, a successful custom sports car manufacturing company he founded with his brother Thomas in 1994. Kirkham said he would turn the company reins over to his brother while he runs for governor.

Much of the company’s work is done in a former aircraft factory in Poland. Working in Poland and serving an LDS Church mission in Peru, he said, gave him firsthand knowledge of what socialism does to people.
