Entire U.S. Stealth Fighter Fleet Grounded

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:35 PM PDT

By David Axe, Wired.com

In past few decades, the U.S. Air Force has spent untold billions researching and developing a family of stealth fighter jets that are supposed to be generations ahead of any dogfighters in the sky.

But after building more than 170 F-22 Raptors and a handful of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, not a single one is available for service. The Air Force currently has zero flyable stealth fighters. None.

The vaunted F-22 has been grounded with a possible faulty oxygen system since May. Production of the last few Raptors is even on hold, because the jets can't fly from the factory.

Last week, test flights for the newer F-35 were suspended, too, because of a valve problem in the plane's integrated power package. It's the third time this year that JSFs have been grounded. Tests may resume as early as next week. Then again, they may not.

Yesterday, the U.S. military committed to spending another $535 million to buy 38 more Joint Strike Fighters — a family of stealth jets that are supposed to become the multipurpose, affordable workhorses of tomorrow's fleet. Ninety percent of America's combat aviation power is eventually supposed to come from the jets' three variants.

Bachmann Newsweek Cover Goes for Insult But Gets Criticism in Return

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:27 PM PDT

By FOXNews.com

Rep. Michele Bachmann has declined to get into the scrum with Newsweek over its cover story of the presidential candidate called “The Queen of Rage,” accompanied by an unflattering photo of the Minnesota Republican, but others are calling the magazine out of bounds in its depiction.

The National Organization for Women President Terry O’Neill said that the cover of the magazine’s latest edition is “sexist” and referred to a simple test by the group’s founder Gloria Steinem to explain how they determined that conclusion — would the magazine do the same to a man.

“Who has ever called a man ‘The King of Rage?’ Basically what Newsweek magazine — and this is important, what Newsweek magazine, not a blog, Newsweek magazine — what they are saying of a woman who is a serious contender for president of the United States of America…They are basically casting her as a nut job,” O’Neill said to The Daily Caller and NOW confirmed to FoxNews.com on Tuesday.

“The ‘Queen of Rage’ is something you apply to wrestlers or somebody who is crazy. They didn't even do this to Howard Dean when he had his famous scream,” she said.

Newsweek has defended the photo — an extreme close-up of the crystal blue-eyed Bachmann looking over the camera with a dark blue background — saying that several of the images taken of her appeared the same way. The magazine posted other photos of her on its website, and many of them are flattering.

Shoppers go nuts on tax-free in Arkansas

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:16 PM PDT

By Suzi Parker, Reuters

Arkansans shopped until they dropped on Saturday, braving temperatures deep into the triple-digits to take advantage of the state’s first sales tax holiday weekend.

“I have never seen anything like this,” said Clancy Graham, a manager at Little Rock’s RK Collections Boutique, an independently owned store. “If we could do this three times a year, it would be amazing. It has done crazy good stuff for our business.”

Arkansas lawmakers approved the holiday in February to give parents a tax break on their back-to-school shopping for items such as uniforms, clothing and school supplies.

The tax-holiday also covers items not necessarily needed for school including wedding apparel, girdles and costumes.

Officials have estimated it would cost Arkansas about $2 million in revenue.

Texas, Mississippi, Florida and other states have had such a holiday for several years to ease the tax burden on families just before the school year, and to encourage consumers.

DHS Funds Real-time Spy Cams on SF Buses

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:14 PM PDT

By Kurt Nimmo, Infowars.com

The Department of Homeland Security will fund an effort by San Francisco to install real-time video cameras on 358 city buses, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The existing system, installed a decade ago, stores footage on tape located on each vehicle.

The new surveillance system will use a wireless network "that will enable SFMTA personnel to view, download and store the captured video images wirelessly and view them in real-time or through the Internet."

According to city documents, "the new system will provide real-time viewing of images, inside and outside the bus, by law enforcement officers, emergency responders and other authorized personnel on a real-time basis from a distance of about 500 yards in case the bus is hijacked and used for terrorism activities."

In March, it was reported the DHS planned to introduce new mobile surveillance technology at train stations, stadiums and streets.

Mother’s blood test reveals baby’s sex

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:11 PM PDT

By Frederik Joelving, Reuters

Blood drawn from expectant mothers could offer parents an earlier sneak peek at their baby’s sex than methods currently used in the U.S., researchers said Tuesday.

The test may be particularly valuable for families that harbor sex-linked genetic disorders like hemophilia, they add.

Because such disorders mostly strike boys, knowing that the baby is a girl could spare the mother diagnostic procedures, such as amniocentesis, that carry a small risk of miscarriage.

“It could reduce the number of invasive procedures that are being performed for specific genetic conditions,” said Dr. Diana Bianchi of Tufts University School of Medicine, who worked on the new study.

But other researchers voiced concerns, saying it could be misused to terminate a pregnancy if the baby isn’t of the desired sex.

At town hall, McCain takes heat for “Tea Party hobbit” comment, refuses to apologize

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:07 PM PDT

By Lucy Madison, CBS News

At a Town Hall meeting in Arizona on Monday, a group of angry voters rebuked Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for using the phrase “Tea Party hobbits” in a speech on the Senate floor last month, and demanded that the former presidential candidate issue an apology, according to the East Valley Tribune.
McCain, one of many lawmakers using Congress’ August recess as an opportunity to hold town hall meetings and connect with constituents, defended his remarks – and pointed out that he was merely quoting a Wall Street Journal article.

“What apology is in order?” McCain asked, when called on to apologize. “What was wrong that I said?”

The editorial McCain quoted in his July 28 remarks likened Tea Party members to characters in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

“The idea seems to be that if the House GOP refuses to raise the debt ceiling, a default crisis or gradual government shutdown will ensue and the public will turn en masse against Barack Obama. … Then Democrats would have no choice but to pass a balanced-budget amendment and reform entitlements, and the Tea Party hobbits could return to Middle-earth having defeated Mordor,” McCain said, quoting the editorial.
