Taxpayers Will Pay for Obama Bus Tour of Battleground States, Says White House Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:20 PM PDT From: CNSNews.com (CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama's upcoming bus tour through the Midwest states typically viewed as swing states during presidential election years will be paid for by the taxpayers, the White House says. Obama will start the tour on Aug. 15 and will talk about strengthening jobs and the economy, the White House announced on Tuesday. "He is very happily getting out into the country again after a very sustained period here in Washington and he looks forward to talking to folks about growing the economy, creating jobs,” said White House Press Secretary Jay Carney. “We will have more details, as I said, about the specifics of the trip.” Carney indicated he did not know now precisely where the president would go or what he might be announcing. CNSNews.com asked Carney, "Is that a campaign event or a presidential event? Carney answered, "Negative. That is an official event." CNSNews.com followed, "So it is being funded by taxpayers in battleground states?" Carney responded, "He's the president of the United States." Gold to hit $2,000 before year end Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:14 PM PDT By Garry White, The Telegraph Gold at $2,000? I didn't used to think so – but now I am not so sure. In fact, I'm almost convinced it will happen before the year is out. Last week's events on Capitol Hill in the US were very damaging. After we abandoned the gold standard, the dollar is now the globe’s reserve currency – and US politicians decided to play a game of chicken with the debt ceiling. Their behaviour verged on the shameful. The fact that an 11th hour deal was done and the ceiling was raised is a relief, but the process shattered trust and confidence in US politicians. There is also an uncanny correlation between the gold price and the US debt ceiling. Over the past 30 years, the gold price has tracked the ceiling whenever it has been raised. The US economy is also flat lining, with slower growth now expected – confidence in the country evaporated overnight and a frantic hour of trading on Wall Street sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average on its worst run since the financial crisis, falling for the eighth successive day. This gloom has also raised the prospect of more money printing by the Federal Reserve. QE3 is not a certainty, but it is now more likely than it was even last week. This will further debased the value of the dollar and will cause even more investors to flee to the safe-haven currency of gold. Insulin Pumps Vulnerable to Hacking Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:09 PM PDT From: FOXNews.com LAS VEGAS – Even the human bloodstream isn’t safe from computer hackers. A security researcher who is diabetic has identified flaws that could allow an attacker to remotely control insulin pumps and alter the readouts of blood-sugar monitors. As a result, diabetics could get too much or too little insulin, a hormone they need for proper metabolism. Jay Radcliffe, a diabetic who experimented on his own equipment, shared his findings with The Associated Press before releasing them Thursday at the Black Hat computer security conference in Las Vegas. “My initial reaction was that this was really cool from a technical perspective,” Radcliffe said. “The second reaction was one of maybe sheer terror, to know that there’s no security around the devices which are a very active part of keeping me alive.” Increasingly, medical devices such as pacemakers, operating room monitors and surgical instruments including deep-brain stimulators are being made with the ability to transmit vital health information from a patient’s body to doctors and other professionals. Some devices can be remotely controlled by medical professionals. Although there’s no evidence that anyone has used Radcliffe’s techniques, his findings raise fears about the safety of medical devices as they’re brought into the Internet age. Serious attacks have already been demonstrated against pacemakers and defibrillators. To read more, visit: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/08/04/insulin-pumps-vulnerable-to-hacking/ |
Deal could endanger health care law Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:05 PM PDT By JENNIFER HABERKORN, Politico.com The debt ceiling agreement could jeopardize millions of dollars, and perhaps billions, in initiatives from President Barack Obama's health care reform law if the super committee can't come up with required spending cuts. Many of the pots of money in the law — one of the Democrats' most prized pieces of legislation — could get trimmed by the debt deal's sequestration, or triggered cuts. The funds for prevention programs and community health centers, grants to help states set up insurance exchanges and co-ops, and money to help states review insurance rates could be slashed across the board if the panel can't find enough cuts this fall. Funding for the temporary high-risk pools for pre-existing conditions could be sliced, too, as well as grants to improve maternal and child health. And as previously reported by POLITICO, the law's cost-sharing subsidies — which are supposed to help low-income people pay their out-of-pocket expenses — could face the ax, too. The prospect of reductions to the health law's programs — which would undermine the law's attempts to expand access and improve health quality — could provide an added incentive to Democrats to avoid the triggered cuts. The reductions will happen if the new committee can't find at least $1.2 trillion in savings over the next 10 years. "There are at least 15 provisions of the Obama health care law that will find themselves subject to this trigger if the committee is not able to come up with other cuts," said Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.). "When I look at these, I think it gives a huge incentive to the Democrats to find cuts. What would be triggered if we can't find other cuts would cut right into the Obama health care law." Senate Republican leadership aides identified the potential funding cuts shortly after the law passed and are talking with the Congressional Budget Office to determine what parts of the law would be subject to sequestration. POLL: Obama, Romney tied in Fla Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:02 PM PDT By BRENT KALLESTAD, YahooNews.com TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — President Barack Obama is losing support among Florida voters, especially among independents, a poll released Thursday shows. Fifty percent of voters surveyed randomly by landline telephone between July 27-Aug. 2 by Quinnipiac (Conn.) University said Obama would not deserve a second term in the election were held today. However, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was the only announced Republican candidate with enough support in the poll to give the president a strong challenge. Both men were favored by 44 percent of those questioned. In a matchup against Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is expected to get into the race for the GOP presidential nomination, Obama was favored 44 percent to 39 percent. However, Obama held double-digit leads over all other Republican presidential hopefuls. Romney, an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination in 2008, led Perry 23 percent to 13 percent in a sampling of 510 Republican voters with none of the other announced candidates reaching double digits. “Gov. Perry’s stock is rising even before he announces whether he’ll run,” said Peter Brown, assistant director for Quinnipiac’s polling institute. MSNBC Host, Guest Consider Whether Tea Partiers Are Addicts, ‘Delusional’ Posted: 04 Aug 2011 11:58 AM PDT By: Michael Warren, TheWeeklyStandard.com MSNBC host Martin Bashir interviewed Stanton Peele, a psychologist and an “expert on addiction,” this afternoon. Bashir urged Peele to psychologically evaluate supporters of the Tea Party. “It reminds us of addiction because addicts are seeking something that they can’t have,” Peele said. “They want a state of happiness or nirvana that can’t be achieved except through an artificial substance and reminds us of the Norway situation, when people are thwarted at obtaining something they can’t, have they often strike out and Norway is one kind of example to one kind of reaction to that kind of a frustration.” Bashir later asked: “So you’re saying that they are delusional about the past and adamant about the future?” “They are adamant about achieving something that’s unachievable, which reminds us of a couple of things. It reminds us of delusion and psychosis,” Peele responded. Yesterday, Democratic House members and Vice President Joe Biden reportedly called Tea Partiers “terrorists,” apparently following the lead of many liberals. And Maureen Dowd in today’s New York Times compared supporters of the Tea Party and their allies in Congress to “cannibals,” “vampires,” “zombies,” and “the metallic beasts in ‘Alien.’” Here’s Bashir’s full exchange: BASHIR: What is the effect giving people their way all of the time? How does it shape our thinking behavior if by being adamant and dogmatic we get our way? PEELE: Well, the way I think about it is they are pursuing goals that can’t be achieved. It’s sort of like a child who has some kind of fantasy, and they keep asking you to give them things to acquire that, but it’s impossible to arrive at the goal that they want. The idyllic paths that they are pursuing probably never existed and certainly not something we can reach right now. BASHIR: So you’re saying that they are delusional about the past and adamant about the future? Man Accused Of Breaking Bird Feeding Law Might Be Jailed Posted: 04 Aug 2011 11:53 AM PDT From: CBSMinnesota.com BLOOMINGTON (WCCO) — A Bloomington man is facing possible jail time, accused of breaking a city ordinance that prohibits residents from feeding wild animals. In Bloomington, it is legal to use bird feeders — as long as they are 5 feet off the ground. Neighbors and the charges allege that Craig Brown was throwing feed onto the ground, which is illegal. For years, Brown said he tried to make his backyard a haven for birds. Now, birds rarely visit Brown's backyard. Months ago, Brown removed all his bird feeders after he said those feeders landed him in trouble with the law. "I am nervous," said Brown. "They have the right to send me to jail." A video taken by a neighbor in December showed the Bloomington City Attorney just how popular Brown's yard was for animals. In the video, dozens of birds are seen eating from the ground.
