Florida House passes online hotel tax measure Posted: 03 May 2011 04:42 PM PDT By: Businessweek.com The Florida House has passed a bill to exempt online hotel booking companies from taxes on their price mark-ups that they consider to be service fees. The bill passed 77-38 on Monday. It now goes to the Senate where a similar bill is stalled in committee. The bill is supported by online companies such as Expedia, Travelocity and Priceline. It’s opposed by larger hotels that don’t get the tax break because they do their own online bookings as well as counties and local tourist development agencies that say they are losing millions. Several lawsuits have been filed over the issue in Florida and other states. The bill’s advocates argued that most services already are exempt from taxation in Florida. Opponents said it would legalize tax cheating. To read more: http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9MVF6DG0.htm |
Seoul Police Raid Google Offices Over Personal Data Collection Posted: 03 May 2011 04:35 PM PDT Police in South Korea have raided local offices of Google Incorporated in what they say is a search for evidence that Google’s mobile advertising arm has been illegally collecting private data. Police said members of their cyber unit conducted the raid Tuesday. They carried away hard drives and other equipment related to Google’s AdMob unit, which is suspected of collecting personal location information without authority or permission. The probe is not directly related to a previous investigation of Google in South Korea. That probe concerned the incidental collection of personal data while Google cars were cruising through neighborhoods and taking photographs for the company’s Street View service. Google officials say they are cooperating with the latest investigation, which comes amid rising concern that Apple and other mobile telephone producers are saving data on users’ personal movements for advertising purposes. Rand Paul: GOP revolt on hiking debt limit will eclipse spending deal Posted: 03 May 2011 04:31 PM PDT By: Michael O’Brien, TheHill.com Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Monday that he expects more GOP opposition to raising the debt ceiling than for the agreement forged to the fund government for the rest of the 2011 fiscal year. If Paul is correct, it will make it tougher for congressional leaders to win the votes necessary to raise the ceiling. It would be particularly difficult for House Republican leaders, who have had to wrestle with a number of conservatives that dug in and demanded more cuts in the 2011 spending debate. “I think the debt ceiling, many of the Republicans are now going to vote against it,” Paul said Monday evening on the Fox Business Network. “More will vote against it than voted against the spending plans. And we’ll see what happens. I’m not sure exactly what the count will be.” Fifteen Senate Republicans voted against the deal in a mid-April vote. In the House, 59 Republicans voted against it. Republicans have maintained they don’t view a default on U.S. debt as an option, though they’ve also toyed rhetorically with the possibility of not allowing a House vote if the Obama administration doesn’t agree to sufficient concessions. The Treasury Department said Monday that a vote to increase the debt limit must be held no later than Aug. 2. Republican, tea party movement figures attack Davis Posted: 03 May 2011 04:26 PM PDT By: Robert J. McCarthy, Buffalonews.com Suddenly, congressional candidate Jack Davis is the bull's-eye target in a host of political cross hairs. After posting a strong 23 percent showing in last week's Siena College poll, the Tea Party candidate making his fourth try for the 26th Congressional District seat is now on the receiving end of attacks by nervous Republicans as well as local figures in the tea party movement incensed over his use of their moniker. Both groups are taking aim just days after Davis told The Buffalo News he will organize with the GOP should he win the special election May 24, a move that in effect pits Democratic candidate Kathleen C. Hochul against two Republicans — Davis and official Republican candidate Jane L. Corwin. Now the GOP is ratcheting up last week's verbal criticism of Davis into mailers delivered throughout the district linking him to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and "liberal Democrats." "Meet the Real Jack Davis: A Liberal Democrat That Must Be Stopped," screams the headline on one mailed piece. Another claims he supported Pelosi and President Obama while accepting contributions from disgraced Rep. Charles B. Rangel, D-Harlem. "With a record like this, how can we trust Jack Davis?" asks the mailer, featuring photos of Pelosi, Obama and Rangel. The mailings were sponsored by the state Republican Party, whose executive director, Thomas J. Basile, cit- ed Davis' three runs for the seat as a Democrat. "It's obvious that Democrat Jack Davis doesn't share our Republican values," he said. "Voters deserve to know the truth about his dishonest attempt to distort his record. Jane Corwin is the only real Republican in this race." To read more, visit: http://www.buffalonews.com/city/politics/article411441.ece |
