Tax issues stall deficit committee as deadline nears Posted: 10 Nov 2011 03:47 PM PST By Lisa Mascaro, LA Times Deadlock. Impasse. Cooling-off period. Call it what you will, but the congressional super committee on deficit reduction has again stalled out after a flurry of proposals this week from Republican and Democratic members as the Thanksgiving deadline approaches. Talks continue behind closed doors as smaller groups of lawmakers from the largely secretive 12-member panel try to strike a deal to reduce deficits by $1.5 trillion over the next decade. But the stalemate revolves around the issues that have stunted such efforts all year: Republicans are unwilling to agree to the scale of new revenues Democrats insist are needed to get their agreement to cut Medicare and other domestic spending and entitlement programs. Talks hit a “breakthrough,” as Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, called it this week when the GOP strayed from its rigid anti-tax stance and offered new tax revenue for the first time. But Democrats rejected the GOP proposal as paltry because the new taxes were paired with a permanent lowering of income tax rates on wealthy Americans and other households. Ron Paul: Obama Presidency On The Verge Of Being A “Dictatorship” Posted: 10 Nov 2011 03:44 PM PST From: Real Clear Politics Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) says President Obama’s continued use of the executive order “brings the modern presidency dangerously close to an elective dictatorship.” “That is arrogant,” Paul said of Obama frequently using the executive order function as of late. “It is flaunting the Constitution and the whole principle of how we're supposed to operate. The idea they can just do this and take over the legislative function and brag about it — and Congress does nothing and the courts do nothing about it, it’s very, very bad.” “He’s dictatorial, is what he is,” Rep. Paul said before the end of the interview. To read more, visit: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2011/11/09/ron_paul_obama_presidency_on_the_verge_of_being_a_dictatorship.html |
Women Hope to Cash in on 11/11/11 Births Posted: 10 Nov 2011 03:40 PM PST From: FOXNews.com The Des Moines Register reported the women are taking up Dr. Ross Valone’s offer to refund his fee for any birth that happens Friday, which is 11/11/11. The Des Moines obstetrician announced in February he would put the fee money into a bank account in the baby’s name, with the agreement the money cannot not be withdrawn until the child’s 21st birthday. His fee usually runs between $900 and $2,000. Valone says he has two cesarean sections scheduled for Friday and that he will probably deliver at least two other births for women who have reached full term. Posted: 10 Nov 2011 03:37 PM PST From: Tennessean.com A group of Middle Tennessee conservatives is suing a California businessman for $19 million, claiming he tricked them into investing in a sham business idea for a television network devoted to the tea party movement. Among those suing is Bill Hemrick, the Brentwood millionaire who is the Tennessee financial director for Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann. Hemrick has been active in tea party circles in Williamson County, helping to organize the National Tea Party Convention in Nashville in 2010 that was headlined by Sarah Palin. He worked briefly raising money for presidential candidate Herman Cain. Hemrick and the other plaintiffs — Howard Luartes, Reinhold Holtkamp and Melvin W. Martin of Williamson County; James Hearn of Davidson County; and James Huffnagle of Dickson County — ultimately invested $287,500 in the tea party television venture. Hemrick and Anthony Loiacono founded Tea Party HD in 2010, but Hemrick and the other investors now claim in the lawsuit that Loiacono never kicked in his own promised investment and used the plaintiffs' money as his own "personal bank account" to pay himself, his family members and his business, Heads & Tails Inc., "exorbitant rates" for the few projects Tea Party HD undertook. "The alleged purpose of Tea Party HD was to be the 'world's first HD provider of news about the Tea Party,' " the lawsuit states. "In reality it was an investment scheme to defraud politically conservative-minded citizens who support the Tea Party mission." Loiacono is a former high-level executive of The Upper Deck Co., a California-based sports cards and memorabilia company — a company of which Hemrick was a founder. Tea Partier Hopes To Run Ad Attacking Keith Ellison’s Muslim Faith — In Dem Primary Posted: 10 Nov 2011 11:27 AM PST
Conservative Tea Party activist Gary Boisclair is mounting an unusual bid for Congress in Minnesota — as a Democratic primary challenge, in the solidly Dem district of Rep. Keith Ellison. And along the way, he hopes to run an attack ad targeting the incumbent's Muslim faith. Boisclair told the area news site Patch.com that the ad is not running on TV yet, but he hopes to do so "once my coffers get filled." "Congressman Ellison swore an oath to defend the Constitution — on a Quran," Boisclair says in the ad. "The Quran says Christians and Jews are infidels. The Quran says Christians are blasphemers, who should have their hands and feet cut off, and that they should be crucified, and killed. "Do you really want someone representing you, who swears an oath on a Quran — a book that undermines our Constitution and says you should be killed? I'm Gary Boisclair, and I approve this message." Senate in party-line vote rejects measure to overturn FCC net-neutrality rules Posted: 10 Nov 2011 11:21 AM PST By Gautham Nagesh, Josiah Ryan and Brendan Sasso, The Hill The Senate rejected a bid to overturn the Federal Communications Commission’s controversial net neutrality rules on Thursday in a party-line vote. The measure passed the House in April, but failed in the Senate on a vote of 52 to 46. It needed 51 votes to pass and was not subject to a filibuster. The White House threatened earlier this week to veto the measure if it cleared the Senate, which came as no surprise since President Obama made net neutrality part of his campaign platform. The rules approved by the Commission in December would prevent Internet service providers from discriminating between two similar websites or content providers. "Without net neutrality, Americans' access to the Internet would hinge not on our right to free speech but on the whims of the corporations that would control it,” said ACLU legislative counsel Christopher Calabrese. NLRB documents shed light on Boeing fight in South Carolina Posted: 10 Nov 2011 11:19 AM PST BY JAMES ROSEN, MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPER -The Miami Herald WASHINGTON — Lawyers for the federal labor agency fighting Boeing's new factory in North Charleston, N.C., repeatedly joked among themselves about the dispute and exchanged a political cartoon portraying S.C. Sen. Glenn McConnell as a crass-speaking confederate soldier, according to internal documents released Wednesday. The emails, memos and other documents from the National Labor Relations Board, which the agency provided in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, also portray Sen. Lindsey Graham's behind-the-scenes efforts to prevent it from filing a complaint against Boeing. And two internal emails on April 21 and April 22 refer to Sen. Jim DeMint as "Senator Dement" and "Sen. Dement," with the normally capitalized "M" in his name typed as a small "m" in an apparent bid to tie it more directly to the word "demented." In an April 8 conversation, Graham warned NLRB acting general counsel Lafe Solomon against incurring DeMint's wrath if he took action against Boeing over alleged union-busting at its Everett, Wash., commercial jet plants. "He said that the charge would scare Boeing's customers and could affect orders," Solomon wrote in a note for his files after talking with Graham. "He said that the political fallout would be huge and that he was more reasonable than his Senate counterpart (DeMint)." Graham used tougher words in a follow-up conversation three days later.
