Lindsey Graham Trails Joe Wilson In Possible 2014 Senate Primary

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 06:59 AM PST

By Eric Kleefeld, TalkingPointsMemo

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who has both bad-mouthed and praised the Tea Party movement in the past, isn’t up for re-election until 2014. But when that comes, a new survey from Public Policy Polling (D) finds that Graham could be quite vulnerable in his Republican primary — against Congressman Joe “You Lie” Wilson!

The poll finds that only 42% of the state’s Republican primary voters approve of Graham’s performance, with 40% disapproving. And in a hypothetical primary against Wilson, who famously shouted out “You lie!” during a speech on health care by President Obama to Congress, it doesn’t look good for Graham: Wilson gets 43% of the votes, and Graham gets 41%. The margin of error ±4.1%.

“Lindsey Graham should thank God his next race is not until 2014,” writes PPP president Dean Debnam. “He’d be in good shape in November, but at this rate, he’d be lucky to survive that far.”

Chairman Raises Specter of Cutting FCC Funding for Net Neutrality

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 11:36 AM PST

By Juliana Gruenwald, National Journal

The chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee said today that the House could deny funding to the Federal Communications Commission to carry out controversial network-neutrality rules, possibly as early as next week when the chamber is expected to take up a bill to keep the full government funded. The FCC-approved order aims to ensure that broadband providers do not discriminate against Internet content and applications.

Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., made the threat during an interview as part of a National Journal Live event, where he repeated his earlier pledge that House Republicans will use “all the tools in the toolbox” to try to block the order approved in December.

No Taxation Without Representation

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 11:32 AM PST

By P.J. Orvetti, NBC Washington

"No Taxation Without Representation" means different things to different people, it seems.

In an interview with Black Voice News, freshman Florida Rep. Allen West, an outspoken Tea Party supporter who was one of two black Republicans elected last November, said that while he is unsure if the District of Columbia should have a House vote, "perhaps an exclusionary zone should be set up where District residents do not pay federal taxes."

This idea has been floated in the past, but it never goes anywhere. While U.S. territories like Guam and Puerto Rico, which also lack representation, do not pay federal income taxes, they also do not have a vote for president, nor the full rights that the District enjoys.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if D.C. became a tax haven, though. Our population would skyrocket, the city could swing from solidly Democratic to solidly Republican, and that enclave in Northern Virginia that quit D.C. in 1846 might want to rejoin.

Tea Party adds new dimension to New Hampshire campaigning

By Editorial Staff, WorldMag.com

The Tea Party movement is adding another dimension to the first-in-the-nation primary strategy for a growing number of potential Republican presidential hopefuls.
Tea Party supporters have made significant inroads in New Hampshire, which typically prefers GOP moderates and establishment candidates when choosing White House nominees. The grass-roots movement has claimed GOP leadership posts at the local and county level, and last month Tea Party-backed Jack Kimball edged out businesswoman Juliana Bergeron for state party chairman.

Would-be White House contenders like Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, and Rudy Giuliani, who as recently as four years ago would have focused on wooing Republican establishment figures, now are making quiet overtures to Tea Party leaders in this early voting state.

At this stage, the primary stands as a wide-open contest that hinges on whether the Tea Party voters unify behind one candidate or remain splintered.

Gov Scott’s Budget Displays Tea Party Courage

In Eustis Florida, I had the great pleasure of warming up the crowd, speaking, entertaining and singing at a Tea Party rally in which Florida Governor Rick Scott debuted his 2011 Budget. It was a historic event solidifying the power and influence of the Tea Party Movement. It felt like a family reunion with Tea Party groups from all over Florida.

The crowd erupted in cheers and applause in response to Gov. Scott’s plan to cut nearly five billion dollars from the budget. A reporter was surprised, “So, you people are OK with these cuts?” I replied, “Yes, patriots have told me they do not care if their “pet project” gets cut. We have got to get spending under control.”

Kudos to Gov Scott for having the courage to lead and “do the right thing”.

There is a great 50s movie titled, Abandon Ship! A luxury liner sinks leaving 27 survivors in a life boat designed for a capacity of nine. The captain dies leaving the executive officer in charge. Land is 1200 miles away. The new captain’s responsibility is to save as many lives as possible. Thus, he is forced to make extremely painful and devastatingly difficult decisions as to who is considered “dead weight.”

Activists Launch Tea Party Magazine

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 09:38 AM PST

By Patrick O’Connor, The Wall Street Journal

Do you think the Weekly Standard has gone soft? Or that National Review is in the tank for Republican leaders? Some tea party activists do and are launching Tea Party Review, a magazine that bills itself as "the first national magazine for, by, and about the Tea Party movement."

The first cover? Sarah Palin.

The monthly — $34.95 for an annual subscription – plans to deliver articles about the movement from the same people who created it: Tea party activists who campaigned for politicians they could call their own.

"People are weary of the distorted version of the tea party movement that we see in most of the media," said Katrina Pierson, an organizer of the Dallas Tea Party who will serve as the magazine's national grassroots director. "Tea party members want a magazine for the movement, created by members of the movement."

The new magazine, edited by Christina Botteri, a tea party organizer, will launch later this week at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington. It is published by Higher Standards Publishers, which describes itself as "a niche oriented publishing company." Its other titles include: "The Tea Party Express Commemorative Journal," "Confessions of a Black Conservative" and the satirical children's book "Help! Mom! Radicals are Ruining My Country!"

Topics for the first edition range from "Big Business political corruption" to tea party lobbying to how the movement can attract Hispanic support, according to a press release. The magazine will also profile some of the first tea partiers elected to Congress, as well as historical figures, such as Alexis de Tocqueville and Booker T. Washington.

Ahead of Patriot Act vote, some tea-party lawmakers express reservations

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 09:32 AM PST

By Felicia Sonmez, The Washington Post

As the House votes Tuesday on extending key provisions of the Patriot Act counterterrorism surveillance law, it will be worth watching the tea party-aligned members of the new freshman class – some of whom are expressing doubts about the measure.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), would extend three provisions of the law passed after the 9/11 terror attacks through Dec. 8, 2011. It is expected to easily win passage.

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who highlighted his opposition to the law during his upstart 2010 Senate campaign, signaled Monday that he may vote ultimately vote against an extension when the measure comes up in the Senate, likely later this month.

“I’ve had a lot of reservations about the Patriot Act,” Paul said when asked whether he’s leaning toward voting for an extension. “We’re reviewing it and we’re going over it, and we will have something out probably in the next couple of days,” he added. “We won’t be shy about it when it comes out.”

Paul’s father, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), was among the trio of Republican lawmakers who opposed the Patriot Act when the House approved it in October 2001.

Some young conservative lawmakers, including Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), have not yet decided how they’ll vote Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Times. A spokesperson for Chaffetz’s Utah colleague, conservative freshman Sen. Mike Lee (R), did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Politico puts Allen West on list of most vulnerable congressmen

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 09:28 AM PST

By Anthony Man, Sun Sentinel

Freshman U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Plantation, is on Politico’s list of 10 most vulnerable members of Congress.

“Even at this early stage, the top targets and most vulnerable members are becoming clear,” the political news website reported Tuesday.

West ranks No. 4 on the list. Here’s part of what Politico said about him:

“West, who holds a highly competitive district, has so far not been treading cautiously…. and has drawn notice for signaling that he would be armed at congressional events. In one instance, he refused to answer when asked whether he was packing heat. On the bright side: A favorite of the conservative grass roots, he can raise cash at the snap of a finger.”
