Rand Paul Says Republicans ‘Aren’t Maybe Brave Enough’ to Tackle Deficit

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 01:42 PM PST

By Jonathan Karl, abcnews.com

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., took aim at the newly released House GOP budget, saying it falls far short of what needs to be done to deal with the federal deficit.

“It’s really not going to touch the problem,” Paul said. “There’s a disconnect between Republicans who want a balanced budget but aren’t maybe yet brave enough to talk about the cuts to come.”

The plan by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., released on Thursday, would cut non-security discretionary spending by $58 billion by the end of fiscal year 2011, which ends on Sept. 30.

In an far-ranging interview aboard the Capitol Subway, Paul embraced the label “true believer” and said staying true to the principles of the Tea Party movement is more important to him than being a Republican. He also refused to rule out a future run for president and suggested it may be time to reduce U.S. force levels in Afghanistan.

FreedomWorks, Tea Party Express develop new technology, methods to keep grassroots connected

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 01:37 PM PST

By Matthew Boyle, DailyCaller.com

Tea Party groups FreedomWorks and Tea Party Express are both rolling out some new technology to keep grassroots conservatives connected with each other and with their elected leaders in Washington.

FreedomWorks launched FreedomConnect, a geo-location-driven social networking service for conservatives around the country. FreedomWorks director of federal and state campaigns Brendan Steinhauser told The Daily Caller it's comparable to President Barack Obama's campaign web initiative, mybarackobama.com, but goes a few steps further.

"It takes things like MyBarackObama.com and Facebook and combines them into something much more effective. This takes the concept of local organizing and knocks down all the walls associated with that," Steinhauser said in a phone interview. "Instead of everyone having to trade business cards at a meeting and email each other, now they can get on FreedomConnect and you create your profile. Similar to other social networking sites, you can connect with them, but it's all based on geography."

Debt Ceiling Vote Could Spark First U.S. House GOP Battle

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 01:32 PM PST

By Star Tribune via HispanicBusiness.com

A looming revolt against raising the national debt limit has opened the first visible rift between the new GOP leadership in the U.S. House and a faction represented by House Tea Party Caucus leader Michele Bachmann.

The Minnesota Republican also has received high-profile backing from former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who has made opposition to raising the debt ceiling part of his likely presidential campaign.

On the other side of the argument are a majority of Democrats and Republican leaders, including House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, who say reality dictates raising the country’s $14.3 trillion debt ceiling or facing a U.S. default. That limit could be reached as soon as March 31, forcing what Boehner has called the first major vote that lawmakers must handle “as adults.”

The Obama administration warns that not raising the debt limit would spark catastrophe should the country default on its loans, triggering an economic collapse worse than the 2008 financial crisis and lasting for decades.

But Bachmann and her allies have stood firm against authorizing more debt, one of the central tea party issues in November’s elections that turned the House over to the GOP. She has circulated a petition with 150,000 signatures against raising the limit, along with proposed spending cuts of more than $400 billion.

Why Sarah Palin keeps skipping CPAC

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 01:27 PM PST

By Rachel Weiner, WashingtonPost.com

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin today turned down an invitation to speak at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference even after being offered the plum keynote speaking spot, the fourth year in a row she’s turned down an offer to speak at the event.

“February is our busiest winter month and with all the prior obligations and outside travel already scheduled for the month I had to forgo some of the opportunities in the Lower 48,” said Palin in an email to the Fix Thursday explaining her decision.

Palin’s statement, plus the fact that her political action committee is sponsoring a reception at the event seems aimed at making clear that there’s no beef between her and the organizers. (Some conservatives, including Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) are skipping out over the inclusion of gay groups.)

But, is there more to the story? First a quick rehash of Palin’s past no-go’s at CPAC.

*In 2010, a source told Politico that Palin did not attend because she had issues with the American Conservative Union, which organizes CPAC, and chairman David Keene in particular, because he had asked FedEx for financial support in a legislative fight with UPS. However, a CPAC spokesperson told the Fix that they never heard more about this conflict, and that there was no indication from Palin’s team that it was anything more than a scheduling issue.

Regan’s Libertarian Spirit

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 01:17 PM PST

By David Boaz, Brittanica.com

Libertarians have mixed feelings toward Ronald Reagan. When we're feeling positive, we remember that he used to say, "Libertarianism is the heart and soul of conservatism."

Other times, we call to mind his military interventionism, his encouragement of the then-new religious right ("I know you can't endorse me, but I endorse you."), and his failure to really reduce the size of government. But the more experience we have with later presidents, the better Reagan looks in retrospect.

After a dispiriting era of stagflation, he revived American spirits and our faith in free enterprise. He slashed marginal tax rates and ushered in a "long boom." Along with Margaret Thatcher, he both symbolized and galvanized a renewed enthusiasm for entrepreneurship and free markets.

He shocked the chattering classes in Washington and New York when he told the truth about communism: that it was a world of "totalitarian darkness" and a "sad, bizarre chapter in human history whose last pages even now are being written." Even we anti-communists thought he was overly optimistic when he said that in 1983.

Sen. Rand Paul lone senator to vote against ‘laser pointer’ amendment to FAA bill

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 01:08 PM PST

By Chris Moody, DailyCaller.com

Like father, like son.

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul cast the sole vote in the Senate against an amendment to the FAA re-authorization bill which would make it a federal crime to flash a "laser pointer" at airplanes.

The Senate approved the measure, 96-1.

Paul, who is a member of the Senate Tea Party Caucus, said he thought it best to leave it up to the states to determine their own laws about the issue.
